Nachos Grande Group Break: 1999 UD Collector's Choice - Pack 01

1999 UD Collector's Choice
Series 1

According to the pack wrapper, the '99 UD Choice Series 1 packs contain the following inserts:
1:1  * StarQuest
1:8  ** StarQuest
1:23  *** StarQuest
Sequentially numbered to 100:  **** StarQuest
1:5  Mini Bobing-Head Cards
1:13  Yardwork

As I did with the first pack of the 1998 UD Collector's Choice, I've scanned every card in the first pack.  Let's see who got what!

Pack 1:

3.  Matt Anderson - Rookie Class Subset (Tigers)

All things considerd, the Rookie Class subset cards are pretty nice.  The full color photo of the player meshes nicely with the monochromatic ball field in the background.  Of course, it would be nice if the ballpark in the background corresponded to the team the featured player played for.

9.  Carlos Beltran - Rookie Class Subset (Royals)

13.  Preston Wilson - Rookie Class Subset (Marlins)

39.  Troy Glaus - Cover Glory Subset (Angels)

I really loved the Cover Glory cards in the 1998 Collector's Choice set, but the '99 Cover Glory cards don't quite interest me in the same way.  It's a bit disconcerting to have a card that is almost all yellowish-orange with only a small, inset full color photo breaking up the monotony.  The cards do, however, look like they could be a magazine cover (which is the whole point of the subset I guess).

52.  Travis Lee (Diamondbacks)

53.  Andruw Jones (Braves)

85.  Tony Clark (Tigers)

The landscape cards in this set look really nice.  I only wish that the entire set was in landscape!

99.  Raul Mondesi (Dodgers)

125.  Desi Relaford (Phillies)

132.  Eli Marrero (Cardinals)

140.  Barry Bonds (Giants)

SQ18.  Vladimir Guerrero - * StarQuest (Expos)

Draw Your Own Card - Ken Griffey Jr. (Mariners)

This card will go to Dan since he picked the Mariners, however, I won't include all the other (you get one per pack I believe) unless Dan really wants them (they are junk afterall)!

Join the Club (junk card)

While not the most exciting pack, the majority of the cards in the pack were from teams that were claimed in the group break (which is great)!  The Tigers (and Grand Cards) were the winners with 2 cards, though the best card in the pack was probably the Bonds card which is going to dgwbuck2.

More pack rips will be coming - I'm still looking for the first Mets, Orioles, Red Sox, (and Reds) cards - but it's only been a few packs so no worries yet!

  3. What's with all the tiger love? This was in the heart of a decade of futility when there was nobody on the team worth remembering, yet here I am raking in the cards. I guess I can't complain!
