Group Break: Pack Wars: 2001 HD vs. 2000 Topps Stars

The 2001 Topps High Definition set is the only set without at least one win in the pack wars.  Can HD knock off Topps Stars and even up the playing field a bit...or will Topps Stars crush HD and take the overall lead themselves?  Only one way to find out!  For this round, the Topps HD card will always be listed first.  The competition will pit three packs of Topps HD versus 3 packs of Topps Stars for a grand total of 12 cards in the round.

2001 Topps HD (packs 08, 09, and 10) vs. 2000 Topps Stars (packs 09 and 10)

Rick Brosseau (Blue Jays) vs. Joe Morgan (Reds)
It's obvious that the sets that have lots of Reds in them have an advantage in pack wars...and that's not a bad thing in my book!  As such, this one is easy even if you aren't a Reds fan!  0-1 Topps Stars with the early lead.

Nomar Garciaparra - Super Star of the Game insert  (Red Sox) vs. Pedro Martinez (Red Sox)

A battle of two Red Sox - who prevails?  In my book, Nomar is the clear winner - I've always liked him (and his wife Mia Hamm) quite a bit.  Pedro, on the other hand, always kind of annoyed me for some reason.  Besides that, the Nomar card is an insert and the Pedro is not.  Easy choice:  1-1 overall.

Geoff Jenkins (Brewers) vs. Mark Mulder (Athletics)
I don't have much of an opinion (good or bad) about either of these guys...  I guess I'll base it on the photo, in which case the Jenkins is marginally better.  2-1 Topps HD in the lead now.

Jose Vidro (Expos) vs. Brian Giles (Pirates)
While there is something ironic about a Pirate "Topps Star"...I still am giving the win to Giles.  And thus, after one pack of HD we are tied at 2 wins each.

Scott Rolen (Phillies) vs. Troy O'Leary (Red Sox)
Now that Rolen is a Red, he's an easy choice for a winner this round!  Topps HD back on top by one:  3-2.

William Smith (Marlins) vs. Lyle Overbay (Diamondbacks)
I've never heard of William Smith...and since it was his rookie card back in 2000, I'm guessing his card isn't worth much now.  On the other hand, while I've heard of Overbay, it isn't like his cards are exactly valuable either.  That said, the Overbay is also a rookie card and Lyle's the better player.  3-3 now heading into the second half of the pack war!

Preston Wilson (Marlins) vs. Ken Griffey Jr. (Reds)
Heh, Topps Stars won't go down easily...  Sending out a Griffey Jr. as a Red is an almost guaranteed win - and it is a win in this case!  3-4 Topps Stars on top again.

Chris Bass - Chrome Parallel #099/199 (Pirates) vs. Tony Gwynn (Padres)

When does a no name rookie card beat out a Hall of Famer like Gwynn?  When his rookie card is a serially-numbered shiny rookie.  If anyone ever bothered to collect the complete Chrome Parallel set of Topps HD it would be a really nice looking (and super shiny) set!  As for the pack wars, we are tied up again heading into the final pack of Topps HD!  4-4.

Tony Gwynn (Padres) vs. Willie Stargell (Pirates)
You've gotta be kidding me!  Once again, Tony Gwynn ends up with the short straw...this time his HD card is knocked out by Willie Stargell's Topps Star card.  Poor Tony.  4-5 Topps Stars in the lead with three cards left!

Carlos Delgado (Blue Jays) vs. Pokey Reese (Reds)
I'm not much of a fan of Pokey Reese...however, he is a Red and Delgado has no special place in my heart...nor is either card overly exciting...  So, with that, Topps Stars assures themselves of at least a tie!  4-6.

Ken Griffey Jr. (Reds) vs. Mike Lamb (Rangers)

Uh yeah, Griffey as a Red is an easy, easy win.  Plus, that's a gorgeous card of Griffey!  5-6 Topps Stars with a one point lead...and one card to go.  Can HD salvage a tie?

Tim Hudson (Athletics) vs. Adrian Beltre (Dodgers)
Eesh, there's a clunker of a match-up.  I'm guessing Tony Gwynn wishes he would have been matched up against either of these guys instead!  Based on the photo alone, I have to give the nod to Hudson...and with that, a tie for HD and Topps Stars.  6 all.  Topps HD still remains winless, though they do have two ties so it isn't like they've been blown out of the water thus far.  In fact, Topps HD moves ahead of Topps Stars based on win percentage after this round!

Let's update the score board!
