A TCDB Surprise Card from mpdillard25!

Group Break: Five more packs of 2002 Fleer Genuine

The box of 2002 Fleer Genuine consists of three mini boxes with 8 packs per mini box.  These five packs finish off the first mini box.  One thing that's fun about each pack of Genuine is that there appears to be either an insert or hit in each pack, will that trend continue?

Pack 4:
9.  Mark Mulder - Athletics
23.  Matt Morris - Cardinals
43.  Mark Quinn - Royals
81.  Jacque Jones - Twins
GL 1 of 15:  Genuine Leaders:  Sammy Sosa - Cubs

Fleer sets could always be counted on for some interesting inserts.  In fact, Fleer was probably a close second to Pacific in terms of innovation (and craziness) when it came to baseball cards around the beginning of the 2000s.  I kind of like the Genuine Leader card quite a bit - the top of the card has a metallic finish to it which makes it feel different enough from the regular base cards.  The Genuine Leaders are seeded 1:11 packs so we ought to land one more (statistically speaking) somewhere in the box.  Easy victory for the Cubs, their third of the break.

Pack 5:
13.  Mark Grace - Diamondbacks
34.  Fred McGriff - Cubs
87.  Craig Biggio - Astros
89.  Jeff Cirillo - Mariners
24 of 25 TA:  Touch 'em All:  Scott Rolen - Phillies

Question:  How many insert cards can you name that feature a photo of a base as the main design element?  Until I opened this pack, I could name exactly zero such sets.  The Touch 'em All cards are seeded 1:10 packs, so we have almost a fifty-fifty shot at landing three cards total within the box.  Like the previous pack, the insert card rules the day - easy pack win for Philadelphia this time around.

Pack 6:
25.  Kevin Brown - Dodgers
36.  Pedro Martinez - Red Sox
86.  Mike Piazza - Mets
Tip of the Cap:  Relic:  Barry Bonds - Giants #20/32

Although this is a rather itty bitty relic, it's still a great pull for the Giants!  The Bonds cards were some of the premier chase cards in the set and the Tip of the Cap relics are quite rare.

The card is numbered out of 32 which makes it even cooler if you ask me - our second serially numbered relic of the break - good stuff!  Congrats San Francisco on your die-cut relic!

Pack 7:
46.  Bartolo Colon - Indians
62.  Derek Jeter - Yankees
82.  Larry Walker - Rockies
92.  Mark Buehrle - White Sox
BI 13 of 25:  Bat's Incredible:  Derek Jeter - Yankees

It's a Derek Jeter hot pack!  The Bat's Incredible cards are seeded 1:10 packs (and have a truly horrific punny name to boot).  This is an easy win for the Yankees given that 40% of the pack was Derek Jeter cards.

Pack 8:
8.  Randy Johnson - Diamondbacks
51.  Sammy Sosa - Cubs
94.  Frank Thomas - White Sox
99.  Shannon Steward - Blue Jays
NG 23 of 30:  Names of the Game:  Jim Thome - Indians

Like many of the inserts, the Names of the Game cards are also seeded 1:10 packs.  This is the Indians first insert card of the break but it's Cleveland's second pack win already.

At this point in the break, we've discovered 3 serially numbered cards, 7 relics (counting patches) - two of which were serially numbered relics, and a serially numbered autograph.  Of the 30 MLB teams, only the Reds, Tigers, Angels, Brewers, Twins, Athletics, Padres, Mariners, and Rays are without at least one pack win.  The good news for group break participants - of those nine teams, two are mine.  That sucks for me...but it's good for the rest of you.  Of course, the break is young yet so there's plenty of time for fortunes to change!

  1. I wish there were more game used hat cards. Nice pull.
