There's an ongoing contest happening over at The Chronicles of Fuji that I've been a part of. To be more precise, I've tried to be a part of the contest but I think I've probably missed too many entries (and thus points) to have any legitimate shot at prizes. Even so, I'm going to take a stab at the latest challenge:
Outside of the sports memorabilia genre, is there anything else you collect?
I would guess most card collectors have found themselves collecting other things at one point or another. I know I have!
I would say my collecting habits began with Legos.
I used to love the castle sets, my brother collected the pirate sets, and together we worked on collecting the town and space sets. We even had one of the motorized trains. The above image was yanked from the (rather modern) Lego website. I did own a few small castles but nothing quite like the above product.
After outgrowing Legos (is that even possible?), I moved (both literally and figuratively). In my new town, everyone seemed to play Magic: The Gathering so that's what I did too.
I still have a big 'ol box (or more) of Magic cards. I always told myself I'd sell them on eBay but I've never bothered. They are still sitting in my parent's house (somewhere).
Unfortunately, Magic didn't get the ladies so I basically gave up on collecting much of anything once high school hit. I was all about the various sports and activities which left no time (and no money) for much in the way of collecting.
The two non-sports collections that I mentioned were the big ones in my life, however I have also had brief forays into other collections. For instance, there was a time when I was big on collecting unsharpened pencils from various places. I also collected stickers for a bit. I still have a coin collection (mostly pennies but some other "better" coins reside in it as well). I would say that I collect video games (though I have gotten better at selling games I no longer play and/or beat). My wife would tell you that I collect electronics to this day. I probably should add woodworking tools to my list of collections as well. One more: books. I have so many books...
There is also a collection of mine that straddles the line between sports and non-sports - and that's my original Allen & Ginter collection.
As many of my readers probably know, I've been slowly working on the 1889 Fish from American Waters Allen & Ginter set. My collection is currently at a modest 9 (out of 50) cards but I'm still proud of it.
In addition to the fish, I also have another three original Ginter cards (two from the Game Birds set) and the third from the Quadrupeds set. I also just got a fourth original card but you'll have to wait until I reveal my Ginter case results to see that one...

Sadly, I played Magic: The Gathering after high school, even going to some professional tournaments in my day. I don't play any longer, but when I am out with my kids and they want Pokemon cards, I can't lie and say that I don't try to steer them toward learning Magic so I have an excuse to play again.
ReplyDeleteLike Kyle I also played mtg after high school. I played many ranked torunments and at one point i was ranked 21st in my state and 300 something in the nation.
ReplyDeleteI get an itching to play again every now and then but haven't craved.

Collecting an original A&G set is awesome. I hope you pick 'em off one at a time and have fun.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get all those original A&G cards eventually.
