Getting Back on My Feet

I haven't had any time lately to work on trades - which probably explains why the last week or so was extremely boring for my mailbox.  When all you get is bills trips to the mailbox aren't nearly so much fun.  However, before I can jump back into the trading fray, I do need to whittle down the stack of envelopes that are sitting next to my desk.

One such envelope is from Mike from Ryan's Memorabilia Blog.  This is actually the second trade I've made with Mike - the first was back in 2009!  Mike contacted me with an offer to send me a 2010 Allen & Ginter mini card that I needed which excited me quite a bit since I'm desperately trying to acquire the final few minis to finish off that set.

In case you are wondering (and don't want to click on over to my full want list), here are the 2010 regular back mini cards that I still need:
Regular back minis:  6, 8, 20, 34, 51, 54, 58, 59, 91, 97, 106, 107, 109,  114, 137, 170, 178, 184, 187, 212, 228, 230, 231, 235, 246, 254, 266, 274, 278, 280, 289, 294
Although Mike only mentioned having one card from my want list - he ended up sending me a healthy stack of Reds to go with the Derek Lowe mini.

Out of the stack, here is a quick rundown of my five favorite cards:

#5:  2009 Topps Update:  Legends of the Game - Christy Mathewson

Mathewson doesn't get the same love that a lot of the other old-timers so getting a card of him is a fairly rare event.  I'm not a huge fan of the design of the card but I do happen to like the photograph quite a bit - it looks appropriately old-timey.

#4:  2010 Upper Deck - Ryan Hanigan

Hanigan is one of the under-recognized, under-appreciate MLB players.  He has done a great job for the Reds over the past few years behind the plate.  Sure, he may not hit a lot of homeruns (he had 5 in his career at the time of 2010 release), but he does everything else well.

#3:  1981 Topps - Tom Seaver

Most people probably think of Tom Terrific as a Met - but to me, he's a Red.  As such, you better believe that I like acquiring any card I can of him in a Reds' uniform.

#2:  2009 Goodwin - Johnny Bench

I didn't buy more than a pack or two of the 2009 Goodwin set - but if the set had more cards like this Bench card I think I would try to collect the full set.  This is cardboard gold - especially because of the Reds running man logo superimposed over the outline of Ohio.  The only reason this card isn't ranked number 1 is because...

#1:  2009 Upper Deck - A Piece of History - Jay Bruce

...I have to give the nod to a serially numbered Jay Bruce card!  Bruce is one of the many good young players that the Reds have locked up for a few years - and he played quite well last year.  He's still a frustratingly streaky hitter - but when he's "hot" watch out - he's a TON of fun to watch play!

I would be remiss if I didn't also mention that Mike threw in a couple of Barry Larkin cards - I didn't include them in the countdown because well...almost any Larkin card is better than your average Reds' card!

I've been slow in getting a return package ready for Mike (he probably thought I wasn't going to send him anything at all at this point).  However, that's not the case - it just took me a bit of time to find the specific card I was looking for.  I can only hope he likes it...

Thanks for the trade Mike!  And, as always, if anyone else wants to trade - check out my want list and make an offer!
