Game Week: My Top 10 PlayStation 3 (PS3) Games!

Yesterday, I took a look at my Top 10 Wii / Wii U games.  Today, it's time to turn our attention to my other current console - the Playstation 3.  Here's my Top 10 games for the PS3 (note: I do not have a PS4 so all these games are PS3 games).  As I did with the Nintendo list, I'll provide a brief review for each game and/or reasoning for why the game made my list!

#10:  ModNation Racers
ModNation Racers allows you to build your own race tracks and then race go karts around them.  It's basically the game that I always wished Mario Kart would be - track creation plus racing.  Unfortunately, despite the plethora of track options available for your designs, the actual racing component of ModNation Racers never really grabbed me.  I spent a fair bit of time creating tracks only to race on them once or twice and call it a day.  This particular game, if combined with the racing mechanics of the Mario Kart series, could become the perfect kart racer - unfortunately, without the aspect of "fun racing" it's more of an afterthought instead.

#9:  Call of Duty (Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops 2, Ghosts)
Yeah, yeah, I know.  Call of Duty is for chumps.  However, I have to admit that I probably have logged more hours playing the various Call of Duty games for PS3 than almost any other game.  I put all three in the same slot though on my countdown because let's be honest - each Call of Duty is basically the same as the last with different maps (and slightly different kill streaks).  I would also say that so far I like the newest game  the least of the three listed above.  Of course, it's also the current game which means if you are going to buy one to play with other people (and who actually does this missions for these games anyhow?), you almost have to buy Ghosts.

#8:  Batman:  Arkham City
When this game first came out, I was super excited to play it because it garnered many great reviews.  However, after playing for a bit of time I became "stuck" and couldn't figure out where I needed to go next in order to keep the story progressing.  Unfortunately, I have a habit of liking to explore every nook and cranny of a game as I move along which sometimes means I end up messing up the order of how I am supposed to discover things.  I'm not sure if that is what happened with Arkham City but I know that I never returned to the game after that happened.  The one nice thing about not buying a PS4 though is that I'll have plenty of time to go back and replay some of my older games - and Arkham City is definitely a game that I'd like to give another go!

#7:  Red Dead Redemption
I never got into Rockstar's world famous Grand Theft Auto games but I did find myself intrigued by the company's take on the wild west.  In a bit of a rarity for me, this is another game that I never actually beat the entire way though I no longer remember why I quit...  I think I ended up getting a new game that simply sucked up all my time and then by the time I was ready to return to Red Dead I more or less forgot the controls and what I was supposed to be doing.  Much like Arkham City, this is a game that I could see myself replaying from the start in an effort to finish the entire game!

#6:  NCAA Football 12
Yeah, it's an older game but I loved this version.  The best part about how old it is is that you can get it for dirt cheap (Amazon offers it for about $10 brand new)!  This particular game offers all the pageantry you'd expect from a college football game with relatively easy-to-use controls.  I had a lot of fun playing through multiple college football seasons (as Penn State).  Unfortunately, once the various allegations against my favorite DI school came to light, I more or less backed off of all things NCAA (including video games).

#5:  Uncharted:  Drake's Fortune
Developer Naughty Dog's Uncharted series is probably one of the biggest reasons why some people buy a PlayStation 3.  There are current three games in the series (on the PS3 anyhow) and Drake's Fortune is by far the worst of the three.  That said, it still ranks #5 on my list which should show you just how great this series really is!  As for this game, my biggest complaint would be the controls (mostly throwing grenades).  I also found the story to be lacking as compared to the later entries, though that might be because I actually started my Uncharted experience with Uncharted 2 rather than beginning with the first game in the series.  If you are thinking about trying the Uncharted series, I would definitely begin with this game since you won't want to play it after playing Uncharted 2 or 3!

#4:  MLB 13:  The Show
I love MLB games and MLB: The Show series on PS3 is by far one of the best baseball games out there.  The graphics are fantastic (for a sports game anyhow) and the various stats that you can track are unparalleled.  I love the various stadiums - it's almost like being there in person!  Finally, the announcing is mostly top-notch as well.  This is the only sports game series where I can say that.

#3:  Uncharted 3:  Drake's Deception
Uncharted 3 was a great, great game.  It was not, however, quite as good as Uncharted 2 (which you'll see on my countdown in a moment).  I will say that Uncharted 3 had some of the best levels that I've ever played in any game - the sinking cruise ship comes to mind as does the wandering in the desert level (a level that you have to play - to say anything more about it would be a gigantic spoiler).  I also liked the fact that the third game sort of "played around" with the patterns that were evident in Uncharted 1 and 2 - but the final boss fight was definitely disappointing.  I remember when I beat the boss thinking "there has to be more" but unfortunately, there wasn't.

#2:  The Elder Scrolls V:  Skyrim
In some ways, I could have justified putting this game in the #1 spot on the list.  I had never played an Elder Scrolls game - in fact, the idea of wizards, elves, and other fantasy creatures simply didn't appeal to me.  I figured the games were all goofy "World of Warcraft"-like games that I wouldn't be interested in.  Boy was I wrong, I can admit that!  When you first start Skyrim, you immediately have to make a couple of decisions that basically set up your character, but from there it's free reign over the entire world.  Sure, there are certain places you can't really access (you can try but the enemies will drastically outclass your character and kill you instantly).  You can, however, spend hours walking around in the various fields and woods - perhaps hunting wild creatures (deer or bear) or maybe picking flowers and other greens in order to concoct various potions.  The main story line is quite long (and mostly entertaining) and then there are five or six other side-stories which are also fairly long.  At this point, I've completed the main story and I believe four of the long side-quests (not to mention a slew of smaller quests).  Despite all that, I still occasionally find something new in the game - and that's after logging many, many hours playing.  If there's ever an Elder Scrolls VI for a system that I own, I'll definitely be buying it (and that's about as high of praise as I can give a game series)!

#1:  Uncharted 2:  Among Thieves
Although Uncharted 2 is much shorter than Skyrim, this game packs more "woah!" moments than any other game that I've played.  I was constantly memorized by the various levels and things you get to do - plus it's a lot of fun throughout the entire game.  I will say that Skyrim offers much, much more in terms of playability after the main mission is complete (Uncharted gives you the task of finding a bunch of hidden treasures but it's not particularly interesting).  For me, although Uncharted 3 had some of the singular best levels, Uncharted 2 is still the best game in the series from start to finish.  It also barely ekes out Skyrim for the best game on the PS3!

So there's my list!  As always, I'm interested in your comments - perhaps you've played (and highly enjoyed) a different game not on my list - let me know!  And, as I mentioned yesterday, if you'd be so kind to click on one of those Amazon ads should you be ordering anything off of Amazon, I would appreciate it - any financial assistance that I can get from blog advertising is greatly needed!

  2. Based on your games I would recommend Fallout 3 and New Vegas, very similar to Skyrim, and The Last of Us which is the same studio as Uncharted. Also Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is one of my favorites that gets overlooked.

  3. I got stuck a generation behind with my PS2. And one thing I liked it that much was the quantity (and quality) of the RPGs. I haven't seen that much RPGs for PS3. At least here in the 'tail of Europe'..
