Brand: Topps Finest
Card number: 231
The Topps Finest line of cards was my first ever experience with the "protective layer" that card companies felt was necessary to protect little pieces of cardboard. Unfortunately, the perfectionist in me won't let me peel the layer off the card despite the fact that the black print greatly detracts from the card. I actually have two copies of this card...and I can't find it in myself to peel the protective layer off of either card. I'm such a sucker I guess.
As for the card design itself, I have to admit that I like this one quite a bit! The front isn't anything special (though I do like the large glove at the bottom of the card - you don't see that very often)! The back is where the card really shines - look at that awesome image of Larkin! Smiling and about to celebrate a home run that a teammate hit is my best guess! It is a little bit sad that the card mentions Larkin's injuries in '97 and then hearkens back to 1996 saying "two years ago, he (Larkin) was a 30-HR/30-SB guy."
