Barry Larkin Collection 305: 1995 Sports Illustrated for Kids - #402

Barry Larkin
Year:  1995
Brand:  Sports Illustrated for Kids
Card number:  402

The Sports Illustrated for Kids cards are actually perforated cards that kids were to punch out of the aforementioned S.I. for Kids magazine.  The Barry Larkin card was only available in the September 1995 edition of the magazine (Larkin was joined by cards of Melissa Moses (diving), Eddie Murray (baseball), Eric Lindros (Hockey), Sherri Slone (water skiing), Thomas Muster (tennis), Kevin Greene (football), Horace Grant (basketball) and Picabo Street (skiing)).  According to the only full checklist that I could find online, the 1995 card is Barry's lone card in the ongoing S.I. for Kids set.

As for the card itself, it definitely has a cheap papery cardboard feel to it (which makes sense since the idea was to punch out the cards).  However, if you can overlook the cheap quality it's actually a rather nice card!  The front features a nice action shot of Barry fielding - complete with all team logos.  The back of the card has a small write-up about Larkin and a trivia question.  Notice that the in the answer to the trivia question the card helps kids with the necessary mathematics!  I LOVE that idea - the more ways we can get kids to understand math, the better (sorry, had to - it's the math professor in me)!

A (Video) Baseball Card Mail Day - Plus an Old Collection Gets New Life!

Over the past couple of weeks, I have made a small number of eBay purchases.  Some of those involve my other hobby that I blog about (LEGO) while others involve the hobby that most of you are here to read about (baseball cards).

Today's mail day is indeed a baseball card purchase from eBay.  If you don't want it spoiled, feel free to watch the video first...

Now that you've seen what I got, let's see how it fits in with the rest of my 2010 Allen & Ginter Relic Set.  As you can see from this post, I have a large number of relics from the set.  Unfortunately, I have yet to find a comprehensive list of which relics were actually produced by Topps that year.  I know that sites like Baseballcardpedia and other do have a list of relics but generally speaking none of them are complete.  What I really need to do is scour eBay for all of the "missing" relics and see if any that are on my list maybe were never actually produced.  How I'll discover relics not on my list though is going to be a much tougher task.

Why oh why can't Topps simply provide a full checklist?!?!

Anyhow, here's the scan of the newest addition to my collection.

Of course, if you happen to have any 2010 Allen & Ginter relics lying around, please please please check to see if I need any of 'em.  I'd love to work out a deal if I do!

Delivery Time! Vintage is Awesome.

Everyone's favorite Mark in the blog-o-sphere has graced my household with another PWE full of vintage-y goodness.  This isn't any old vintage either - it's Cincinnati Reds vintage!

Tommy Helms

The black borders of the 1971 Topps set don't tend to hold up well over time but the card design is quite sharp.  Even better, the photo of Helms features a great cameo of a pair bright yellow light towers.

Tony Perez

You can't go wrong getting a Tony Perez card in the mail!  The 1973 Topps set might not have any black on the front of the card but it does have a black border on the reverse (and much like the '71 Topps black borders chipping is quite evident).  As for the card itself, I like that the photographer must have made Perez pose for a photo in the middle of the bullpen since you can clearly make out a pitcher warming up right behind Tony.

Clay Carroll

Our third and final card in the PWE is a 1970 Topps card featuring Reds' pitcher Clay Carroll.  I don't own nearly as many 1970 cards as I do 1971s and 1973s so this one was much appreciated as well!

Thanks for the great PWE Mark - and I hope the Trade Stack made it to you right before my move to my new place.  I'm pleased to say this is my first trade post since my move - so if anyone reading wants to hook me up with more cards please check out my want list and make an offer!

Barry Larkin Collection 304: 1993 Jimmy Dean - #2

Barry Larkin
Year:  1993
Brand:  Jimmy Dean
Card number:  2

The Jimmy Dean card set consists of 28 different cards including one lone Cincinnati Red (Larkin!).  The front of the card features a decent action shot (with the Reds' "C" logo Photoshopped out of the image).  In fact, the only logo on the front of the card is that of the Jimmy Dean sausage company.

The backside of the card includes a classy black and white sketch of Larkin along with career statistics (both of which I like).  For a set that couldn't use team logos, this is a solid offering (and much nicer and classier looking than the 1991 Jimmy Dean set).

Trade Stack 62: The World Series Competitors Square Off in the Trade Stack!

Here is how this works:
Every so often (i.e. whenever I feel like it), I will add a card to a "Trade Stack".  Whenever the stack becomes appealing enough to someone, that person needs to comment on the post saying they'd like to claim the stack AND tell me which card they are sending off of my want list.  That's all you have to do - trade me ONE card (or more, of course) card from my want list for the entire stack of cards that I'm offering.  Each time, it will be first come, first serve...so act quickly (unless of course you are a gambler and hope to wait it out until there are 10+ cards in the stack that you want in exchange for a single 2004 UD Vintage card that I am looking for)!

The Trade Stack:
Last update:  10/27/14

I began the 62nd Trade Stack with one of the World Series teams (Royals) but didn't get a single bite.  Perhaps by adding in a Giants' card I'll get someone to nibble on the stack?

If you want the stack, remember - all you need to do is offer up any one card from my want list.

1993 Topps:
10.  Will Clark - Giants

2008 Upper Deck Goudey:
88.  Billy Butler - Royals

Want the card(s) in the stack?  Act fast - tell me which card you will send me off my want list in the comments below!  You must leave a comment on the trade stack post in order to claim the card - no more claims via email!  If no one claims this card within a reasonable amount of time (a few hours up to a few days, depending) - I'll add another card to the stack and the process will start again!

It's All Over (the Fat Lady is Singing)! (2014 Topps Stadium Club Group Break)

It's finally time to unveil the contents of the final mini box of the break.  Of course, if you checked my blog yesterday you may have already seen the video for the final mini box but now let's take a look at the full contents.

Base:
Adam Jones - Orioles
Chris Archer - Rays
Eric Hosmer - Royals
Jackie Robinson - Dodgers
Shin-Soo Choo - Rangers
Wil Myers - Rays
Roberto Clemente - Pirates
Chris Owings - Diamondbacks
Christian Yelich - Marlins
Madison Bumgarner - Giants
Babe Ruth - Yankees
Andre Dawson - Cubs

Mariano Rivera - Yankees
Marcus Stroman - Blue Jays
Alex Guerrero - Dodgers
Mike Piazza - Dodgers
Brian Dozier - Twins

Paul Goldschmidt - Diamondbacks
George Springer - Astros

Carlos Santana - Indians
Jose Altuve - Astros
Jose Canseco - Athletics
Koji Uehara - Red Sox
Roy Halladay - Blue Jays
Ty Cobb - Tigers
Adrian Gonzalez - Dodgers
Albert Belle - Indians

Inserts & Parallels:

Beam Team:  Adam Wainwright - Cardinals

Field Access:  Derek Jeter - Yankees

Autograph:

Gregory Polanco - Pirates

Well...

The good news is that we finally got a new autograph.  The bad news is we didn't pull any super mojo autographs.

I have to say, Box #2 was disappointing for most group break participants (in the sense that almost every base card and two of the three autographs were duplicates).  On the other hand, we DID pull a case hit in Box #2 (congrats White Sox) which in my eyes does redeem the box.  I can't complain about pulling a $70-80 card (according to eBay, not Beckett) in the box - plus the three autographs.

I hope everyone has enjoyed their time with the break.  I will be including some assorted team cards from my own collection to help flesh out some of the team stacks.  I also included a bunch of other packs in the break - go to my YouTube Channel to watch me open up all the packs in the break in case you missed any!

By the time you read this post, I should have some of the group break cards packaged up.  I plan to make trips to the post office throughout the week with the goal of getting everyone's cards out to them by the end of the week.  Thanks for playing along - and if you have ideas for a future group break let me know in the comments below!

The Final 2014 Topps Stadium Club Mini Box of the Group Break!

It's time to unveil the final mini box of the group break.

Later this weekend (if all goes well), I'll have the final written report - including my thoughts on the set as a whole.  For now, enjoy the last video!

2014 Topps Stadium Club: The Contents of Mini Box #5 (of 6)

Yesterday, I posted the video for the second-to-last mini box out of the 2014 Topps Stadium Club group break.  In case you missed the video, here it is again:

Now, since some people I know prefer to not watch the video, here's the full typed rundown (with some scans) of the 5th mini box of the break.

Base:
Ernie Banks - Cubs
Cole Hamels - Phillies
Jurickson Profar - Rangers
Wilin Rosario - Rockies
Mookie Betts - Red Sox
Arismendy Alcantara - Cubs
Hunter Pence - Giants
Josh Donaldson - Athletics
Ryan Zimmerman - Nationals
Jacoby Ellsbury - Yankees
Chris Sale - White Sox
Numbers on the pants should be outlawed.

Ozzie Smith - Cardinals
Billy Butler - Royals
Jered Weaver - Angels
Jose Fernandez - Marlins
Cal Ripken Jr. - Orioles
Robin Yount - Brewers
Evan Gattis - Braves
Todd Frazier - Reds
Yu Darvish - Rangers
Yadier Molina - Cardinals
Oscar Taveras - Cardinals
Alex Gordon - Royals
Evan Longoria - Rays
Yasiel Puig - Dodgers

Inserts / Parallels:

Field Access:  Jose Fernandez - Marlins
Who knew the Marlins would be such a good group break choice?!

Future Stars:  Gerrit Cole - Pirates
Some die-cut love for the Pirates - a nice looking card!

Luminous:  David Ortiz - Red Sox
I always loved Stadium Club's Triumvirate cards - this one is especially sharp lookin'!

Gold parallel:  Ryan Howard - Phillies
At least it is a parallel of a decent player (even if the gold parallels don't interest me much)

Autograph:

Maury Wills - Dodgers (again)

Yep, two mini boxes, two duplicate autographs for the second box of Stadium Club.  That is definitely NOT what I was hoping for...At least this duplicate is of a retired player - and with all the Dodger collectors out there I'm sure Night Owl (who claimed LA in this break) will have no trouble swapping his extra Wills auto for something else that he wants.

The Penultimate 2014 Topps Stadium Club Mini Box! (Video Break)

Here's the video break of the second-to-last mini box in the group break.  Enjoy!

PS:
I hope to get a post with scans and a full write-up completed in the near future - but for now enjoy the video.

The Final Bonus Pack of the Group Break: Let's Make it a Rack Pack, Shall We?!

The group break has been a lot of fun - but now it's time to draw it to a close.  This morning, we take a look at the video break for the final bonus pack of the break - a rack pack of 1987 Topps.

In addition to all the 2014 Stadium Club cards, all the Chipz, and all the bonus pack cards, I am also throwing in a bunch of single cards from my personal collection in order to make sure that everyone walks away with a decent sized stack of cards.

I know that group breaks have an element of a gamble to them (and some of you definitely hit the proverbial jackpot with the two boxes we opened), I also know that walking away from a group break with nothing is a big bummer.  It's my hope that everyone will be happy, even if the group break gods didn't smile upon you this time around.

2014 Topps Stadium Club Group Break: CASE HIT ALERT (on Video)!

Here's the video for the mini box I posted about yesterday.

More group break goodies to come in the near future!

Group Break Bonus Pack #6!

I have two more Bonus Packs for the group break - here's one of them to enjoy before we return to the final two mini boxes out of the 2014 Stadium Club box.

Keep it here for more group break goodies in the near future!

2014 Topps Stadium Club Group Break: Hobby Box #2 - Mini Box #1 (CASE HIT!)

It's (finally) time to dig into the second (of two) 2014 Topps Stadium Club group break boxes.  Since each hobby box contains three mini packs, this should be the third-to-final group break post!

Box #2 - Mini Box #1:

Base:
C.J. Cron - Angels

Elvis Andrus - Rangers
Sandy Koufax - Dodgers
Bob Feller - Indians
Joe DiMaggio - Yankees
Carl Crawford - Dodgers
Michael Choice - Rangers
Carlos Gomez - Brewers
R.A. Dickey - Blue Jays
Willie Mays - Giants
Andrelton Simmons - Braves
Greg Maddux - Braves
Tony Cingrani - Reds
Mark Trumbo - Diamondbacks
Matt Cain - Giants

Duke Snider - Dodgers
Adam Wainwright - Cardinals
Carlos Beltran - Yankees
Justin Verlander - Tigers
Matt Carpenter - Cardinals
Ian Desmond - Nationals
Shelby Miller - Cardinals
Sonny Gray - Athletics

Starling Marte - Pirates
Julio Teheran - Braves
Johnny Cueto - Reds

Inserts/Parallels:
Field Access:  Willie Mays - Giants

We pulled this exact card in the first box too...unfortunately, this isn't the only duplicate (not by a long shot).

Legends Die-Cut:  Ken Griffey Jr. - Mariners

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this card - too bad Griffey isn't pictured as a Red so that I could keep it for myself!  I hope Junior Junkie is happy with the pull though.  The Legends Die-Cuts are seeded 1:3 mini boxes or 1 per hobby box making this a nice box hit for the Mariners!

Illuminator Die-Cut:  Jose Abreu - White Sox

WOW!!!  This Illuminator Die-Cut is seeded 1:36 mini boxes which means 1:12 hobby boxes which makes it a CASE HIT for the White Sox!  A huge congrats to JediJeff who claimed Chicago - and probably just landed himself one of if not THE best card in the break!  The two I found that had sold on eBay already each went for almost the price of the entire hobby box ($79.99 for one and $71.00 for the other)!

Autograph:
SCA-JSA:  Jarrod Saltalamacchia - Marlins

Bad news here for most of us in the break - we got our second Salty autograph...  This one is slightly different in that Jarrod added his number to this signature but it's the same card otherwise.  That's now three Marlins autographs out of the four autos we have opened...

Overall, this box was a huge success given the case hit (plus the great Griffey die-cut).  Even the Salty auto, despite being the second of the break, was nice with the number inscription added.  Two more mini boxes remain, let's see if we can luck out and get something else cool!

Trade Stack 62: A New House for Me, A New Trade Stack for You!

Last update:  10/21/14

I'm officially moved into my new residence (side note:  Need my new address - send me an email).  As such, I can now officially commence with card trading again.  I already have a group break up and running, now let's get the Trade Stack up and running too.  Today, we begin the 62nd different Trade Stack in the series - and the rules remain the same as they were back with Trade Stack #1.  You get all the cards in the current Trade Stack in exchange for at least ONE card off of my want list.

Now that the rules have been refreshed, let's see what's on tap for Stack #62.  In honor of the Royals making the World Series for the first time since the 1980s, I figured it would be a good idea to begin the newest Trade Stack with a representative from Kansas City.  Enjoy!

If you want the stack, remember - all you need to do is offer up any one card from my want list.

How About (Yet) Another Group Break Bonus Pack?

As the post title suggests, it's time for another Group Break Bonus Pack (this is bonus packs #4 and #5)!  It is my goal that everyone walks away from this group break with at least 20 cards - so for some of the teams these bonus packs are quite important!  In addition, I plan to add some cards out of my own collection to supplement some of the teams with fewer cards - no one will walk away with nothing!

Here's the next bonus pack - in video form once again.

Stay tuned to the blog - I'll start digging into the second Stadium Club box tomorrow!

Stadium Club Group Break: The Videos of the First Three Mini Boxes! (PLUS a Bonus Pack!)

Over the weekend, I posted the write-ups and scans of the first three mini boxes out of the 2014 Topps Stadium Club group break.  Now, it's time to watch the actual videos that I recorded as I opened each mini box.  I should note that the order that I posted the three mini boxes was slightly different than the actual order that I opened up the boxes (I saved what I thought was the "best" autograph until the end of the first box).  No matter, here are the three videos in the order that I opened 'em!

Mini Box #1:

Mini Box #2:

Mini Box #3:

I hope you enjoyed the first box - most teams did ok though the Mets, Rockies, Orioles, and White Sox are lacking so far.  There's still a second box though, so anything can happen!

I also have decided to add in a few more bonus packs to the group break pool - here's a video for the bonus pack!

Bonus Pack #3:

I hope everyone is having fun - more group break goodies to come!

2014 Stadium Club Group Break: The Next Pack!

Consider my post title as a bit of bait and switch.

Yes, I do have the next pack in the break for you.

No, it's not a Stadium Club pack.

Instead, how about another bonus pack?  I decided to do another video break - so watch the video and see what you get (if anything)!

What's in the video?

  • The Mariners land their first card of the entire break.
  • We pull a card to taunt Night Owl.

Really, what more could you ask for out of 1989 Donruss?!

Enjoy!

More group break goodies to come - stay tuned!

2014 Topps Stadium Club: Hobby Box #1 - Mini Box #3

It's time for the third (and final) mini box out of the first of the two 2014 Topps Stadium Club boxes that are part of the group break.  So far, we've managed to find a pair of Miami Marlins autographs out of the first two mini boxes (who saw that coming?!).  Today?  Well, let's find out if we can go three-for-three in terms of Marlin autographs or if some other team will get in on the signature action!

Base:
Hunter Pence - Giants

Ryan Zimmerman - Nationals
Johnny Cueto - Reds
Josh Donaldson - Athletics
Wilin Rosario - Rockies
Jurickson Profar - Rangers
Chris Sale - White Sox
Ozzie Smith - Cardinals
Cole Hamels - Phillies
Billy Butler - Royals
Ernie Banks - Cubs
Jose Fernandez - Marlins
Evan Gattis - Braves
What the f**k is this?

Todd Frazier - Reds
David Ortiz - Red Sox
#selfie #potus

Cal Ripken Jr. - Orioles
Robin Yount - Brewers
Oscar Taveras - Cardinals
Alex Gordon - Royals
Yu Darvish - Rangers
Yadier Molina - Cardinals
Jean Segura - Brewers
Derek Jeter - Yankees

Evan Longoria - Rays
Yasiel Puig - Dodgers

Parallels / Inserts:

Gold Parallel:  Ty Cobb - Tigers

The Gold foil parallels are seeded 1:3 mini boxes which means this Cobb is a box hit for the Tigers!  Congrats to Matthew who has Detroit (among other teams)!

Luminous:  Yadier Molina - Cardinals

The Luminous die cut cards are also seeded 1:3 mini boxes which means we have another box hit on our hands!  I definitely like the idea of rarer inserts like this - and the card both looks and feels special too.  I think this is proof that you don't need a bit of ink or a bit cloth to make an interesting card!

Future Stars:  Michael Wacha - Cardinals

The Cardinals score another insert in the box (congrats Brady)!  The Future Stars Die-Cut cards are also seeded 1:3 mini boxes or one per hobby box.  I don't think that the design is nearly as nice as the Luminous card but that might just be me.

Field Access:  Miguel Cabrera - Tigers

Two Cardinals inserts, two Tigers inserts...

Autograph:

SCA-MW.  Maury Wills - Dodgers

A big congratulations goes out to Night Owl who happened to claim the Dodgers this time around.  It comes as no surprise to me that I pulled a Dodgers' autograph as I seem to pull more LA cards than just about any other team!  I like getting autos of retired guys though - so to me this was the premier card of the first hobby box!

There's still another entire Stadium Club box that I haven't yet ripped open - so stay tuned to the blog for even more group break goodies in the near future!

2014 Topps Stadium Club: Hobby Box #1 - Mini Box #2

Yesterday, I posted the first of the three mini boxes lurking in the 2014 Topps Stadium Club hobby box.  Today, we move on to the contents of the second mini box within the hobby box.  However, before I get to the contents of the box I want to give Dave & Adams another public "thank you" for serving as a sponsor for this particular group break!

Now, let's get to the cards!

The Luminescent cards are seeded 1:12 mini boxes which equates to 1:4 hobby boxes!  A very nice pull for the Rockies!!

Field Access:  Jose Fernandez - Marlins

The Marlins scored an autograph in the first mini box and now they get an insert...and *spoiler alert* they aren't done quite yet!

Die-Cut Legends:  Sandy Koufax - Dodgers

I love, love, love this card.  The Die-Cut Legends (base variety) are seeded 1:3 mini boxes or 1 per hobby box.  A big congrats to Night Owl for this one.

Autograph:

Jarrod Saltalamacchia - Marlins

Yep, that's right.  Two mini boxes, two Marlins autographs!!  Who saw that coming?  Certainly not me - and I doubt Matthew did either but hopefully he's happy with his haul to date.  I think the Saltalamacchia is a slightly better auto than the Heaney, but what do I know?  I don't follow the Marlins so I fully admit to not knowing a whole heckuva lot about the former Florida Marlins team.

More group break goodies to come in the near future!

2014 Topps Stadium Club: Hobby Box #1 - Mini Box #1

It's (finally) time to start ripping the 2014 Topps Stadium Club boxes!  Each hobby box contains 3 mini boxes - and each mini box contains six packs (with 5 cards per pack).  Since the odds are all based on mini boxes (as opposed to packs), I will list the entire contents of the first mini box below (with scans of course of some of the cards).  I also opened all the mini boxes on video which I will eventually publish to the blog as well...

Also, as a late addition to the post:  There is a contest going on over at CaptKirk42's blog in celebration of his 5 years of blogging.  Go check it out after seeing what we got in our first Stadium Club mini box!

Inserts/Parallels:

Beam Team:  Yu Darvish - Rangers

The Beam Team cards are seeded 1:3 mini boxes which makes this a box hit for the Rangers!

Field Access: Willie Mays - Giants

A cool photo for sure - and a different one (at least I don't recall seeing this particular image used on a baseball card before).  I wasn't necessarily happy to be stuck with the Giants (they went unclaimed in the break) but I will admit that I'm happy to have this particular Giants card in my collection!

Autograph:

SCA-AH.  Andrew Heaney - Marlins

Our first autograph goes to Matthew Scott who claimed the Marlins (as well as a bunch of other teams).  Congrats to Matthew!  The autograph itself is quite nice (and it's on card which is awesome).  I don't see how you get "Heaney" out of the scribble for the last name though...

That's it for the first mini box.  In this box, every team landed at least one card except for the Braves, White Sox, Reds, Angels, Brewers, Mets, Padres, Mariners, Cardinals, and Nationals.  Not bad considering we only had 30 cards in the mini box!  The Dodgers were the big winners in terms of base cards (landing 4) while the Yankees had 3.  The biggest surprise (besides the Marlins autograph) was that the Astros landed two base cards in the mini box!

Two more mini boxes (and with it, two more autographs) to come!  Stay tuned for more group break goodies in the upcoming days!
