Delivery Time! Sports Cards Ate My Brain - The Ken Griffey Jr. Countdown (#12 - 10)

Yesterday, I began counting down a bunch of awesome Ken Griffey Jr. cards that recently arrived in mi casa courtesy of Scott (from Sports Cards Ate my Brain).  Today, it's time to continue our countdown beginning with #12!

#12:  2000 Upper Deck Black Diamond

This is a shiny, textured insert from the 2000 Black Diamond set (a set that I've never opened up a single pack of in my life)!  Much like the 2000 Topps Finest card from the first part of our countdown, this card makes heavy use of the color green...definitely a strange choice for a team named the Reds!  No matter, I love this card despite the overabundance of flying words in the background...and that green color!

#11:  2001 Fleer:

I'm not exactly sure why Fleer decided to pair Ken Griffey Jr. (one of the greatest of all-time) with Jackson Melian (a guy I've never heard of...and I'm a Reds fan).  Furthermore, I have no idea why it was necessary to serially number this card - but Fleer did it.  The gold numbering on the back is 0454/1750.  Not the rarest of cards but still pretty cool - and with all the Griffey Jr. collectors out there I'll gladly take any serially numbered card before they all get scooped up by everyone else!

Speaking of getting cards scooped up, I interrupt this Griffey Jr. countdown momentarily to show off a few of the non-Griffey cards that Scott sent me.  For your viewing pleasure, I present a pair of autographs.

Brandon Larson's auto is quite nice - both in terms of the actual scribbling and the card design.  I can even forgive the sticker part since the card is numbered 011/100 on the back!  The Steve Gibralter card, on the other hand, simply states "Congratulations!  You have just received a limited-edition autographed card" on the reverse of the card...and since this is a 1995 edition I'm guessing limited-edition means somewhere around the 10,000 card mark!

I always appreciate Reds' autographs though - so thank you Scott!  Now, let's get back to the Griffey Jr. cards.

#10:  2000 Bowman Chrome:

I'm generally not much of a fan of Bowman but I can appreciate these shiny, space-themed insert cards all day!  I think the best part of the entire card is the fact that the team logo is nestled inside a flying fireball.  You don't get to see that every day!

Many thanks for the great cards, Scott!  I'll have more from the awesome Griffey Jr. selection in the upcoming days - stay tuned!
