2015 Topps Allen & Ginter: Box 3 - Packs 5 - 8 (the Benedict Arnold of Pirates?)

Here we go!

Box 3:
Packs 5 - 8:

Four more packs, four more cards numbered 301 and up!  The best of the base cards though actually goes to card #177.  That's Bernie Williams (the ex-Yankee) who makes the set as a musician instead of as a ballplayer.  That's kind of cool, sort of a "Where are They Now?" kind of vibe to that card (and certainly fitting into Ginter nicely)!

My minis consisted of two regular back minis (including a David Price short print) and an A&G back mini of Starling Marte.  I also received another one of the pirate themed minis!

Benjamin Hornigold was a mentor to Blackbeard according to his card - and he eventually stopped being a pirate and instead worked for the governor of the Bahamas to hunt pirates.  Can you be a traitor to pirates?  Is Hornigold the Benedict Arnold of pirates?

The final two cards of note are, not surprisingly, both full-sized inserts.  First, a Menagerie of the Mind card of the Griffin.

The other is an Ancient Armory card of the Atlatl.

Although it looks like a big stick in the picture, the Atlatl was more closely related to the modern bow and arrow.  The Atlatl accelerates a flexible shaft (called a dart) from the rear.  According to this website (no idea on authenticity so verify before believing what you read), you can actually hunt using an Atlatl and dart in a number of places around the United States today.

That's it for this round.  I got to learn more about the Atlatl so I'd call this set of four packs a success (plus I had never heard of Benjamin Hornigold so lots of learning happened)!

  1. I'm really falling for those Hoist the Black Flag inserts. I never thought I would chase something other than baseball cards, but I think I may have to collect those pirate cards!

  2. Love that Bernie Williams card!

  3. It was pretty common for pirates to go back and forth with governments in the Caribbean. Some worked as Privateers long enough for the local Governor to trust them so they could get close to his trading ships and then they would begin raiding those ships and then move on.
