The Little League World Series - and Wishing It Came With Bubblegum!

As many of you probably know, the Little League World Series was this past weekend.

(I'm actually writing this post a few hours before the US & World Championships games occur on Saturday.)

I  work in Williamsport, PA (home of the Little League World Series) so the LLWS is very near and dear to my heart.  Even more exciting for me, one of the teams in the US Championship is a Pennsylvania team - and the head coach of that team is an alumni of the college I work for.

Suffice to say, I'm rooting for PA today!

Note:  A few years ago I took a bunch of pictures when I was at the LLWS - if you want to experience it that way, feel free to check out this old post!

While I bide my time waiting for the game to start, I figured I should try to get through some of the mail that piled up over the past week or so - after all, last week was the first week with all the students back at college so by the time I got home from work each night, I was exhausted!

Today's packages is a PWE stuffed with goodies courtesy of Jeff over at Wish They Still Came With Bubblegum.  Jeff and I completed a simple little trade (you can read about his end of the deal here).

The best part of the trade with Jeff was probably that he finished off my 2015 Topps Archives base set for me by sending me the final two cards that I needed.  Who were the two toughest cards to track down?  None other than Joe DiMaggio and Yoenis Cespedes!

In addition, Jeff helped me out with a couple of my 2015 Allen & Ginter wants - though I still have a lonnnnnngggggg way to go with that set!

First up from that set, one of the Healthy Body mini cards - this one being the Vibrating Belt Machine.

According to the card back, the vibrating belt machine was supposed to "shake off the extra pounds without the need for actual exercise."  Sure seems like a good idea, too bad it didn't work!

Another new mini for me - this time from the insect insert set.

Topps usually focuses on big creatures so getting a set called A World Beneath Our Feet is kind of refreshing.  In an fun coincidence, the scientific name of the bug is Photuris Pensylvanica - perhaps a good omen for the PA LLWS team later today?!

Finally, Jeff sent a couple of random Reds to fill out the PWE.

The Gapper card is really only of note for what I found on the backside of the card.

Why does a non-signature card have that little blurb on it?  In case it is hard to read on the device you are using to view my blog - the card back says - and I quote - "The signing of all autographs is witnessed by a Topps representative to guarantee authenticity."

Why is that line there?  That's the big question that I have for now...a question that is only trumped by the question of "Can the PA team win today?"

Thanks for the great trade, Jeff!  As for anyone else, if you'd like to trade - check out my want list and make an offer!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 24 (The BIG Hit!)

I saved this pack until last just because...well, because my streak of not pulling a rip card out of a case of Ginter is finally over!

Points so far: 134.2

Pack 24:

40.  J.J. Hardy
131.  Josh Reddick
Starting Points:  SP-21.  Aroldis Chapman (+2 insert, +1 favorite team = +3)
Regular back mini:  109.  Troy Tulowitzki
Double Rip Card:  DRIP-8.  Joe Mauer & Kennys Vargas #34/50  (+15 double rip!)

Pack total:  18 points
Final Box Score:   152.2 points

For the moment, I will NOT be ripping that rip card.  Instead, I'm going to try and flip it on eBay to recover much of the cost of the case.  If that doesn't work, I reserve the right to rip the card and count the contents for my Gint-a-Cuffs score!

----

The above paragraph was written when I originally did all the scanning and basic skeleton of the post (before any rules for Gint-a-Cuffs were posted).  I wanted to get my entire case busted with the spoils on eBay ASAP so as to be able to recoup some of my investment.  The double rip card did indeed end up selling - so I have no idea what was inside (and therefore, I missed out on a lot of possible extra points).  That said, I think my decision was a good one because even with the double rip card my box is clocking in 4th place out of the seven boxes whose scores are currently (as of the time I'm writing this post) on the Gint-a-Cuffs page.

There's always next year.

Trade Stack 68: I'm Watching the LLWS - so How About a Future Stars Card on the Stack?!

Here is how this works:
Every so often (i.e. whenever I feel like it), I will add a card to a "Trade Stack".  Whenever the stack becomes appealing enough to someone, that person needs to comment on the post saying they'd like to claim the stack AND tell me which card they are sending off of my want list.  That's all you have to do - trade me ONE card (or more, of course) card from my want list for the entire stack of cards that I'm offering.  Each time, it will be first come, first serve...so act quickly (unless of course you are a gambler and hope to wait it out until there are 10+ cards in the stack that you want in exchange for a single 2004 UD Vintage card that I am looking for)!

The Trade Stack:
Last update:  8/29/15

I'm writing this post after watching Japan down Mexico in a well-played International LLWS game.  In a few minutes, I'll be glued to the television while rooting for the PA team.  That said, let's throw another card on the Trade Stack just to see if anyone is interested in swapping cards!

Remember, you get the entire Trade Stack in exchange for at least one card off of my want list!

2007 Upper Deck Future Stars:
16.  Aramis Ramirez - Cubs

2011 Topps:
Topps Town (Series 1):
TT-2.  Dan Haren - Angels

2015 Topps Archives:
168.  Mark McGwire - Athletics

2015 Topps Allen & Ginter:
194.  Zack Cozart - Reds

If you want the stack, remember - all you need to do is offer up any one card from my want list.

Want the card(s) in the stack?  Act fast - tell me which card you will send me off my want list in the comments below!  You must leave a comment on the trade stack post in order to claim the card - no more claims via email!  If no one claims this card within a reasonable amount of time (a few hours up to a few days, depending) - I'll add another card to the stack and the process will start again!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 23 (The Penultimate Pack!)

The end of my Gint-a-Cuffs experience for 2015 is almost here - today's pack plus one more pack to round out the final weekend of August.  It's hard to believe that Ginter season is over..and with the end of Ginter comes the end of summer.  Sad days indeed.

Points so far: 127.2

Pack 23:

175.  DJ LeMahieu
193.  Aramis Ramirez
320.  Dallas Keuchel
194.  Zack Cozart (+1 favorite team)
227.  Christian Yelich
273.  Cole Hamels (+2 favorite player)
Starting Point:  SP-30.  David Price (+2)
First Ladies:  FIRST-12.  Abigail Filmore (+2)

Pack total:  7 points
Points so far:   134.2

Too little, too late for this box.  Still, nice to see that the box will at least finish on a high note (the final pack has a big hit in it as I've said pretty much all along).  Unfortunately, I don't think it'll be enough to push the box to the top of the charts.

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 22 (Flying Cars)

So it appears I have some score corrections to make.  A few posts ago, I (somehow) missed counting one of my inserts to my score heading into Pack 22 is actually 130.2, not 128.2 which I had said at the end of the last post.  That's the good news.

The bad news?  Yesterday the commish ruled that my boxtopper is only worth 4 points, not 8.  And so just like that, my box total ends up being down two points (126.2) rather than the 128.2 that I thought I had yesterday.

That sucks - but let's face it, this box isn't topping the leader board anyway (or is it)?!  Here's the next pack...

Points so far: 126.2 (points corrected - see above)

Pack 22:

22.  Trevor Rosenthal
218.  Carlos Rodon
253.  Carlos Beltran (-1 Yankee stink)
185.  Gus Malzahn
254.  Alex Gordon
121.  Wei-Yin Chen
What Once Would Be:  Would-1.  Flying Car  (+2)
Regular back mini:  146.  Michael Morse

Pack total:  1 point
Points so far:   127.2

So two packs left and I need a ton of points to have any shot.  Obviously I am really regretting not picking the box that held my wood mini...or the red pack of minis....or even the silk card right now.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 21 (The End is Nigh!)

I need four monster packs to end the box if I am to have any hope of winning.  Here goes nothing!

Points so far: 121.2

Pack 21:

86.  Rick Porcello
182.  Todd Frazier  (+1 my team!)
315.  Steve Cishek
109.  Troy Tulowitzki
90.  Darren Rovell
252.  Mike Trout (+2 favorite team)
What Once Was Believed:  Was-6.  Brontosaurus  (+2)
A&G back mini:  262.  Alex Cobb (+2)

Pack total:  7 points
Points so far:   128.2 points

I needed to average about 9 points per remaining pack to catch the current "official" leader in defgav.  Seven points is a decent pack total for my box, but it's not enough for what I need (and this is ignoring that the box on Bubba's Bangin' Bits blog is going to blow defgav's total out of the water)!  Oh well, it's been a fun run...though I do have one more hit, so maybe I can still make this interesting?

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 20 (More of the Same)

As of 8/22/15 (when I am writing this intro), the Gint-a-Cuffs leader is defgav with 159.6 points.  Of course, I just noticed over at Bubba's Bangin' Batch of Baseball Bits his mid-box total is 166 points with two packs remaining (including his third hit).  I don't think I can catch him, so let's keep focusing on the 159.6, shall we?

Points so far: 117.2

Pack 20:

192.  Fernando Rodney
303.  Denard Span
228.  Robb Wolf
37.  Mike Mills
237.  Hyun-Jin Ryu
288.  Robinson Cano
Starting Point:  SP-5.  Freddie Freeman  (+2)
A&G back mini:  214.  Corey Dickerson  (+2)

Pack total:  4 points
Points so far:   121.2 points

Alright, four packs remain - I need 38.4 points to catch defgav.  That's an average of 9.6 points per pack....not real likely given that I haven't had a pack score over 9 points in the past five packs.  I can hope though.

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 19 (There's the Annual Ginter Kershaw)

This might be the first year that I didn't pull a Clayton Kershaw hit out of Allen & Ginter (sorry Night Owl)!  That said, at least I pulled a Kershaw insert...

Points so far: 116.2

Pack 19:

64.  Austin Jackson
262.  Alex Cobb
161.  Bartolo Colon
135.  Mark Teixeira (-1, Yankee stink and I cannot afford that right now!)
343.  Angel Pagan
102.  James "Clubber" Lang
Starting Points:  SP-39.  Clayton Kershaw  (+2 points)
Regular back mini:  103.  Salvador Perez

Pack total:  1 lousy point
Points so far:   117.2 points

Ooooooof!  That was a sucker punch to the gut if I ever saw one.  One stinking point.  That's probably the final nail in the coffin for me to place at the top of the leaderboard.  With so few packs remaining (and so many more points needed) it's not looking good for Nachos Grande.

No matter, we will push forward.

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 18 (Another Buyback)

I'm still holding out hope that I can finish at the top of the leaderboard.  I need to avoid Yankees and I need to start pulling a lot of high point cards.  No better time to start the plan than right now - after all, I need to average about 7.5 points per pack from here on out to top the current leader (as of the time I wrote this intro anyhow).

Points so far: 107.2

Pack 18:

162.  Anthony Rizzo  (+2 favorite player)
243.  Jean Segura
340.  Neftali Feliz
155.  Mike Moustakas
20.  Leonys Martin
Menagerie of the Mind:  MM-13.  Cyclops
10th Anniversary Buyback:  (2008 A&G):  100.  David Wright  (+2 favorite player, +3 buyback = +5)
A&G back mini:  226.  Nolan Arenado  (+2 for different back)

Pack total:  9 points
Points so far:   116.2 points

Well, I managed to sneak over the 7.5 pack total that I needed for this pack - that's good news for me!  Let's hope my good run can continue as we approach the final few packs of the box!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 17 (A Black Bordered Mini of My Team!)

Yesterday I finally reached the 100 point threshold.  Unfortunately, I did so with very few remaining packs which means posting a high score for Gint-a-Cuffs will certainly be challenging.  Challenging, but not impossible.

Points so far:  101.2

Pack 17:

87.  Francisco Liriano
99.  Yan Gomes
326.  Mitch Moreland
81.  Buck Farmer
33.  Michael Wacha
2.  Nick Markakis
Starting Point:  SP-13.  Hanley Ramirez  (+2)
Black bordered mini:  284.  Jay Bruce  (+1 my team, +3 black border = +4)

Pack total:  6 points
Points so far:   107.2 points

Not the huge pack that I was hoping for but I'll take 6 points I guess.  As of the time I am writing this post, the highest box score posted is 159.6 points.  That means I need 52.4 points to tie the leader in my final seven packs.  That's an average of about 7.5 points per pack.  Not impossible, but also not easy.  Let's see what happens!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 16 (More Kimbrel!)

Here we go since I forgot to post a pack yesterday...

Points so far: 96.2

Pack 16:

71.  J.D. Martinez
58.  Jacob DeGrom
140.  Jose Altuve
180.  Scott Kazmir
331.  Alcides Escobar
115.  Dustin Pedroia
Reg. back mini:  5.  Craig Kimbrel  (Fav. player mini +3)
What Once Would Be:  Would-7.  Easy-Clean Furniture  (Dumb idea +2)

Pack total:  5
Points so far:   101.2 points

I am way off the pace of most of the other Gint-a-Cuffs scores that I've seen posted.  I do know I have one more big hit on the way though...will it be enough to catch me up or will I forever wish that I had used one of my other boxes from this case that surely would have been good enough to win.  Only time will tell!

Barry Larkin Collection 386: 1996 Leaf - #105 - Checklist

Barry Larkin & Mo Vaughn
Year:  1996
Brand:  Leaf
Card number:  105
Subset:  Checklist

Checklist cards are generally quite boring - so getting a checklist with two star players on it, along with team logos, is actually a nice surprise!  I could do without all the foil on Larkin's side of the card (notice how much nicer Vaughn's side scans).  No matter though, this is a solid design.  The only weird bit is that both Larkin and Vaughn appear in the checklist on the Vaughn side of the card.  I wonder why Leaf didn't put someone like Wade Boggs or Pedro Martinez (or even Tony Gwynn) on the front of the card and then Larkin (or Vaugn - booo!) on the back.  I like my cards having a bit more synergy in the various aspects, but even so, I can't complain too much about a checklist card featuring Larkin!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 15 (Another Hit - This Time a Favorite Player)

Although the rules still aren't posted (I'm writing this post on 7/27/15), the favorite player list is up - and Craig Kimbrel is on it.  That will be important to me momentarily.

Points so far: 78

Pack 15:

289.  Wil Myers
100.  Greg Holland
195.  Torii Hunter
234.  Michael Cuddyer
Starting Point:  SP-6.  Craig Kimbrel (+2 Starting Point, +2 Favorite player list = +4)
A&G back mini:  203.  David Wright  (+2 A&G back, +2 Favorite player list = +4)
10th Anniversary Relic:  FSRB-CK.  Craig Kimbrel (+10.2 Relic, Favorite player list)

Pack total:  18.2 points
Points so far:   96.2 points

That was a nice, high scoring pack for me.  That's the good news.  The bad news is that I'm already to Pack 15 and I still haven't crossed the 100 point threshold.  I had a pretty good case of Allen & Ginter but it sure seems like I picked the wrong box for Gint-a-Cuffs (I chose the box before opening it)!  I'm really wishing I had picked the box that held the wood mini (+25 points for that card alone...over one-quarter of this box's total points to date)!  Oh well...we'll keep rolling and hoping (and yes, there is a big hit in this box so all isn't lost yet)!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 14 (A Slow Burn)

Am I slow playing my Gint-a-Cuffs box reveal?  I can say that the answer was no up until I grabbed the actual pack 14.  Now I can say yes...I'll save that pack for last!

Points so far: 73 (barring box topper point change)

Pack 14:

171. Anthony Rendon
145.  Santiago Casilla
301.  Justin Morneau
261.  Yu Darvish
9.  Jeff Samardzija
220.  Yasmani Grandal
What Was Once Believed:  WAS-1.  Flat Earth  (+2 points)
Regular back mini SP:  338.  Mike Napoli  (+3 nini SP)

Pack total:  5 points
Points so far:   78 points

Well, it's a slow slog through the box...here's hoping the rest of the packs start picking up in terms of points!

Inching Closer to Completing the Full Relic Set!

Way back in 2010, I decided to try and complete my first ever relic set.  Obviously, that hasn't gone as well as I had hoped since it is now 2015 and I'm still working on the set.  No matter though, sometimes persistence pays off, right?

Today, I managed to add one more relic to my set - the Fire Eating World Record Holder - Hubertus "Master of Hellfire" Wawra.

That's quite the claim to fame...

One of the great things about a bunch of the 2010 Allen & Ginter's relics is that the actual relic pieces are things besides your normal gray, white, or black bits of cloth.  For example, Wawra's relic contains an authentic torch wick bit.  How cool is that?!

As of this moment, I only need 28 more relics to complete my 2010 relic set.  I keep my want list up-to-date with what I need but here's the full list for those that don't like clicking on extra links:

  • AGA.  Anthony Gatto
  • AJ.  Avery Jenkins
  • DB.  David Blaine
  • DBR.  Drew Brees
  • DH.  Dan Haren
  • DU.  Dan Uggla
  • DW.  David Wright
  • GS.  Gary Stewart
  • GSI.  Glenn Singleman
  • IS.  Ichiro Suzuki
  • JS.  Jordin Sparks
  • JV.  Joey Votto (jersey only)
  • KF.  Kosuke Fukudome
  • LB.  Lance Berkman
  • MM.  Marvin Miller
  • MP.  Mike Parsons
  • NF.  Neftali Feliz
  • PP.  Preston Pittman
  • RH.  Ryan Howard (bat only)
  • RO.  Randy Oitker
  • RP.   Regis Philbin
  • SJ.  Shawn Johnson
  • SSA.  Summer Sanders
  • TB. Tyler Brandt
  • TH. Tony Hawk
  • TK.  Tom Knapp
  • YG.  Yovani Gallardo
  • ZS.  Zac Sunderland

If you happen to have any of the above cards available for trade, please let me know!!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 13 (Over Halfway Now!)

The last pack was terrible - I got a whopping zero points.  This pack can't possibly be worse, can it?!

Points so far: 67 (barring box topper rule change)

Pack 13:

164.  Adrian Beltre (+2 points)
146.  Michael Morse
294.  Adam Wainwright
72.  Joe Panik
110.  Victor Martinez
350.  Masahiro Tanaka (-1 Yankee stink)
Starting Point:  SP-65.  Maikel Franco  (+2 insert points)
Black bordered mini:  240.  Trevor May  (+3 tiny card power)

Pack total:  6
Points so far:   73 points

Well, the last three packs before this one netted me 5, 2, and then 0 points so I guess I shouldn't complain about a 6 point pack!

Delivery Time! The Highly Selective Ginter Trades Start Rolling In

The first of the 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter trades started rolling in last week.  One of the first packages to grace my mailbox was an envelope courtesy of Brian over at Highly Subjective and Completely Arbitrary.  Brian opened up a box of Ginter and was mostly unimpressed with his haul...which ended up being a good thing for me since he sent many of his goodies my way!

I happen to like this year's edition of Allen & Ginter quite a bit - especially the minis.  Quite honestly, only the First Ladies are even mediocre to me...and the backs of the First Ladies cards have all been fairly informative which makes me like set more than I otherwise would have.

The other mini sets are all top-notch in my book.  Heck, even the what-could-have-been-boring "Magnates, Barons, and Tycoons" set looks good thanks to the money-like color scheme and dollar signs in the set logo.  For my money, Topps outdid themselves with the actual design of most of this year's mini sets.

Another excellent design is the Birds of Prey - there are actually three bird shadows that appear in three of the four corners of the card - but since they are all different (both in shape and size), the design element works out beautifully!  This particular design is the least symmetric of any of the minis, but it might possibly be the best design out of the entire set!

The Mythological Menaces set is another mini set with a nice design, though the actual subject matter of this set and Menagerie of the Mind (a full-sized insert set this year) seem to be a bit too close to the same for my money.  I think Topps should have stuck with one set or the other...perhaps pushed whichever set it decided against off until 2016.

In addition to the minis, Brian also threw in a relic of Micheal Morse.

I was thinking about trying to collect the entire framed relic set this year - the purple frames look really nice with the card design!  However, after realizing that at least one other blogger (Matt from Bubba's Banging Baseball Bits) was also going for the entire purple frame relic set, I decided that I would give up on that goal.

Finally, we end with a bonus card from Brian - a very white-heavy design of an Austin Kearns autograph from Upper Deck.

I think Topps did a much better job with their Ginter designs this year than normal...and the Ginter designs are even more impressive when you compare them to other sets (such as the Upper Deck card above)!

Many thanks for the great trade Brian!  And, as usual, if anyone else would like to trade, check out my want list and make an offer!  I also have now updated my 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter FOR TRADE page as well if you are still working on your set (including inserts)!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 12 (A-Rod is the Worst)

The last pack was brutal (only a +2).  This pack can't possibly be worse, can it?

Answer:  Yes, yes it can.  An even worse pack...makes that +2 pack from yesterday look like the good ol' days.

Points so far: 67 (box topper note goes here as usual)

Pack 12:

276.  Alex Rodriguez (-1 Yankee stink)
36.  Anthony Ranaudo
306.  Stephen Drew (-1 more Yankee stink)
53.  Brandon Crawford
27.  Maikel Franco
200.  Jose Abreu
Starting Point:  SP-94.  Jose Reyes (+2 for not being a Yankee)
Regular back mini:  155.  Mike Moustakas

A freaking fantastic start to a work week, huh?  Zero freaking points.  I hate the Yankees and Gint-a-Cuffs makes that hatred burn with even more fury.

Trade Stack 68: Shiny Time!

Last update:  8/15/15

It is time to add another card to the Trade Stack.  Right now, there's a 2015 Allen & Ginter card, a 2015 Archives card, and now a shiny insert from back in the day.  Surely that is enough to make someone want this stack, right?

Remember, you get the entire Trade Stack in exchange for at least one card off of my want list!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 11 (In Which We Flail About)

The best part about having written all these posts a month ago is that I've basically totally forgotten what exactly was in this box!  I am pleased with my pun in the post title from a month ago...at least my sense of humor (such as it is) hasn't wavered in the past thirty days.

Points so far: 65 (with the usual note about the box topper)

Pack 11:

8.  Garrett Richards
186.  Desmond Jennings
80.  Joe Gatto
46.  Andrew McCutchen
83.  Matt Harvey
217.  Wade Miley
Ancient Armory:  AA-9.  Flail  (+2 points)
Reg. back mini:  157.  Jose Reyes
Code ad card

Pack total:  2 points
Points so far:   67 points

Oof.  A two point pack does not help my per pack average at all!!  This particular pack was probably one of the worst packs of the case...not one player of interest to me - and even the flail is a sort of dumb weapon (at least as compared to many of the other weapons in the set)!  The one bit of good news is that this pack was Yankee free at least.

Allen & Ginter Box Toppers: Who Wants 'Em? (Trout, Puig, Cano, Stanton, plus More!!)

I have already listed my 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter cards that I have available for trade, but what I didn't list in that first lot was all of my box toppers.  This was because I was on the fence about which box toppers I would collect this year (usually I try for them all but I decided that wasn't wise this year).  As such, I choose one set to attempt to complete (Pride of the People) while the other two sets of box toppers I am making available for trade.

What do I have you ask?  Here's what is available.  Note that I will also add these to the original 2015 Allen & Ginter Trade Bait page - and I'll keep that page up-to-date as people claim the cards.  In return, I'm looking for stuff off of my want list (or LEGO sets because why not)?!

Box Loader Insert Set:

B-5.  Corey Kluber (Indians)
B-8.  Yasiel Puig (Dodgers)
B-12.  Evan Longoria (Rays)
B-15.  Giancarlo Stanton (Marlins)

Oversized Cabinet Reprints:

154.  Rusney Castillo (Red Sox)
252.  Mike Trout (Angels)
288.  Robinson Cano (Mariners)

As a reminder, go here to check the most up-to-date list of my trade bait (and to claim any cards you want)!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 10 (A Miracle Kitchen and an A&G Back Mini)

This pack provides our second non-regular mini parallel (the other being the black bordered Heyward from an earlier pack).  I expect a lot more of the base minis in the upcoming packs since we have already discovered four mini inserts.

Points so far: 60 points (barring any box topper change)

Pack 10:

158.  Kurt Suzuki
335.  Collin Cowgill
169.  Yordano Ventura
284.  Jay Bruce (+1 for my favorite team)!
205.  Dustin Ackley
240.  Trevor May
What Once Would Be:  Would-4.  Automated Kitchen  (+2 for being wrong)
A&G back mini:  74.  Casey McGehee  (+2 A&G back)

Pack total:  5 points
Points so far:   65 points

I'm not so sure that 65 points is a great score through 10 packs...a 6.5 per pack average (actually slightly lower given the box topper) puts me below one of the two posted scores to date (Gavin had a 159.6 score with his box according to the leader board page).

Barry Larkin Collection 385: 1996 Upper Deck SP - #65

Barry Larkin
Year:  1996
Brand:  Upper Deck SP
Card number:  65

I never got into the Upper Deck SP brand when it was around.  For some reason, the brand simply never appealed to me (probably the price tag had a lot to do with that).  Looking at the 1996 version of the brand, I can honestly say that I'm still not impressed...  There's way too much foil on the card - and the large SP logo really bugs me (especially since there is no team logo on the front of the card).  I sort of like the different photograph that Upper Deck used - it's unique - but the weird background foil job is too distracting for me to properly enjoy this card.  Needless to say, I won't be trying to track down my own box of 1996 Upper Deck SP anytime soon!

2015 Gint-a-Cuffs: Pack 9 (We Find Our First Hit)

We have opened up eight packs so far without a hit.  Pack #9 changes that.  Will it be a monster point scorer?  Honestly, as of the time I am writing this post I don't know since the rules aren't yet posted.  That said, if I'm being honest my best guess is "no, not a monster point scorer."

Points so far:  50 (with the usual box topper disclaimer)

Pack 9:

26.  Steven Souza Jr.
348.  Aaron Sanchez
170.  Chris Davis
52.  Jake Marisnick
Starting Point:  SP-60.  CC Sabathia  (+2 since he is an Indian here and not a stupid Yankee)
A World Beneath Our Feet:  BUG-9.  Deer Tick  (+2 for the critter)
Full-Size Relic:  FSRA-YC.  Yoenis Cespedes  (+6 points for being a boring full-sized relic)

A relic plus two inserts makes for a pretty good pack.  The Deer Tick is particularly vile - I live in the eastern US so we have to worry about ticks quite a bit (especially with my dog).

Pack total:  10 points
Points so far:   60 points

While the 10 points for this pack is certainly nice, I think I need to get quite a few more points out of my "hit" packs if I have any hope of competing in the competition.  In other news though, I am working on all the various mini sets from this year's edition of Ginter - so if you have any for trade, check out my want list and make an offer!

Trade Stack 68: Big Mac Attack!

The Trade Stack:
Last update:  8/13/15

It's time for another addition to the Trade Stack!  I'm continuing with the 2015 theme for the moment - this time from Topps Archives.  That's one Ginter and one Archives card in the stack - is that enough for you to claim the pile?  Also, if you want to work out a trade for more 2015 Allen & Ginter - here's my full for trade list!

Remember, you get the entire Trade Stack in exchange for at least one card off of my want list!
