2015 Upper Deck Dinosaurs: A Predator of the Sea Hot Pack!

I'm writing this post a few days ahead of December 31, mostly because like most of you I'll probably not be around the computer a whole lot on New Year's Eve.  Furthermore, I fully expect there to be an onslaught of "New Year Resolution" type posts today...so perhaps a post talking about dinosaurs will be appreciated by those who like a bit of variety.

And as for my resolutions?  To be honest, as of the time I am writing this post (Dec. 26) I haven't given them much thought.  Perhaps I'll figure out my own resolutions during the early part of January...or perhaps not?

For now, let's dig back into my 2015 Upper Deck Dinosaurs box.  I've ripped through six packs so far, here come the next two.

Pack 07:
37.  Deinonychus
48.  Suchomimus
57.  Tropeognathus
73.  Herrerasaurus

Mini:  5.  Trodon

The image on the Trodon mini doesn't really show up all that well on the card - a small dino on a mini card means you get an itty bitty picture!  I also think the Herrerasaurus is one of the worst images that I've seen to date from the set.  Luckily, the rest of the cards are pretty nice - and I needed them all so I'm still satisfied.

Pack 08:
33.  Barosaurus

121.  Metriorhynchus

Sticker:  17  Edmontosaurus

Predators of the Sea:  POS-12.  Metriorhynchus

It's a Metriorhynchus hot pack!  The first Metriorhynchus card is one of the short printed base cards while the second is from the fairly rare Predators of the Sea insert set (seeded 1:40 hobby packs)!  I absolutely love the Predators of the Sea card - it's SUPER thick so that you get a layered look to the image...it sort of looks like ol' Metriorhynchus is swimming right out of the card.  Pretty darn cool - and this pack definitely made up for the relatively boring previous pack!

2015 Upper Deck Dinosaurs: Do You Miss Upper Deck?

Through four packs, I've greatly enjoyed my 2015 Upper Deck Dinosaurs box.  In fact, I've enjoyed it so much that this box has sort of made me realize that I miss Upper Deck as a brand.  Oh sure, I didn't collect a lot of what Upper Deck put on offer, but I did enjoy some of their sets immensely (Masterpieces for example).  I also appreciated the fact that Upper Deck (normally) seemed to stress photography above most other things, even in their base sets and kid-centric sets (such as the Collector's Choice line which I loved)!

Of course, with the Dinosaurs set you can't really stress photos since, you know, no one was around to take pictures of the dinos in the wild.  However, Upper Deck has (mostly) hit the jackpot in terms of artistic renderings of the dinosaurs - so much so that I've greatly enjoyed every card in each pack, base, inserts, you name it.  Let's hope that trend continues now as I rip a couple more packs.

Pack 05:
17.  Utahraptor

50.  Olorotitan
106.  Placodus

3-D Dinosaur:  27.  Deinonychus

The Placodus is a high number sea creature short print which is cool.  The 3-D Dino is part of the Predators portion of the set which are much rarer than the Herbivore portion.  For comparison, Herbivore 3-D cards are seeded 1:7.5 hobby packs while the Predators 3-D cards are a much scarcer 1:25 hobby packs (not even one per box).  Of course, there are also Marine (1:50 hobby packs) and Flying (1:150 hobby packs) which are rarer yet!

I'm thinking it's virtually impossible to put together the master set of Dinosaurs.  You'd end up with thousands of extras base cards and you'd still need a ton of inserts.  Plus, I'm not sure the trade demand is all that high for extra Dinosaurs base cards...

Pack 06:
11.  Velociraptor
39.  Oviraptor
68.  Kaprosuchus
98.  Zuniceratops

144.  Brontotheruim

The Brontotherium "thunder beast" is also known as Megacerops.  The Thunder Beast is part of the High Series Super SP Ice Age Creatures portion of the set (seeded 1:8 packs).  You'd need a LOT of boxes (with amazing luck) to land all of the super short prints in the base set!

Two more packs down - and a pretty cool 3-D dino gets added to my growing stack of cards!  What do you all think of the dino set?  Did anyone out there buy the set - and if so, does anyone have any cards for trade (base, SPs, and/or inserts)?  I'm seriously considering making a run at the base set at least - though I'll have to see how close my one box gets me...I may need to make a card order in the new year for another box of Dinosaurs!

Trade Stack 69: A Full Dozen Cards for You in Exchange for ONE Card for Me!

Here is how this works:
Every so often (i.e. whenever I feel like it), I will add a card to a "Trade Stack".  Whenever the stack becomes appealing enough to someone, that person needs to comment on the post saying they'd like to claim the stack AND tell me which card they are sending off of my want list.  That's all you have to do - trade me ONE card (or more, of course) card from my want list for the entire stack of cards that I'm offering.  Each time, it will be first come, first serve...so act quickly (unless of course you are a gambler and hope to wait it out until there are 10+ cards in the stack that you want in exchange for a single 2004 UD Vintage card that I am looking for)!

The Trade Stack:
Last update:  12/29/15

Before I reveal today's addition to the ever-growing Trade Stack, I want to draw your attention to the post I had this morning.  I ended up with an awesome custom Barry Larkin card from Gavin (you can see all the details here).

Ok, now that you have had a chance to look at this morning's post, let's get to the Trade Stack addition.  For today, we find a card from one of my all-time favorite lines of cards, Upper Deck Collector's Choice.

Sure, the Collector's Choice line may not be fancy - you won't find autographs or relics, but it's pure fun...plus some pretty awesome photography throughout the set.  If you haven't ever opened a box of Collector's Choice, I would highly recommend doing so, especially some of the late 90s stuff (which is precisely where today's card is from)!

If you want it, claim it!  Remember, you get the entire Trade Stack in exchange for at least one card off of my want list!

1998 Upper Deck Collector's Choice:
262.  Charlie O'Brien - Blue Jays

1994 Upper Deck:
282.  Mo Vaughn - Red Sox

2007 Upper Deck Goudey:
88.  Robinson Cano - Yankees
(Red back mini)

1999 Fleer Sports Illustrated:
99.  Mark Grace - Cubs

2007 Topps Turkey Red:
181.  Mark Teahen - Royals

2012 Bowman:
BP86.  Gerrit Cole - Pirates

1993 Upper Deck:
315.  Checklist - Will Clark - Giants

2012 Bowman Chrome:
181.  Adrian Gonzalez - Red Sox

2001 Fleer Tradition:
278.  A.J. Burnett - Marlins

2015 Topps Archives:
53.  Roberto Alomar - Indians

2007 Topps Allen & Ginter's:
40.  Adam Dunn - Reds

2010 Topps:
US-244.  Mike Redmond - Indians
Gold parallel:  #1503/2010

If you want the stack, remember - all you need to do is offer up any one card from my want list.

Want the card(s) in the stack?  Act fast - tell me which card you will send me off my want list in the comments below!  You must leave a comment on the trade stack post in order to claim the card - no more claims via email!  If no one claims this card within a reasonable amount of time (a few hours up to a few days, depending) - I'll add another card to the stack and the process will start again!

Delivery Time: Baseball Card Breakdown and the Custom Cardsphere Heroes set!

Over the past couple of days, I've started showing off the 2015 Upper Deck Dinosaur cards that I received from my wife for Christmas.  However, that wasn't the only card related Christmas present that I got.  In fact, I ended up getting a number of Christmas presents in the mail from some pretty awesome bloggers including Gavin from Baseball Card Breakdown.

According to his post, Gavin created a 9 card set called Cardsphere Heroes where he picked nine bloggers who collect certain players and then created a nine card set consisting of those players.  I was lucky enough to be one of the bloggers that Gavin picked - so that means Barry Larkin is part of the custom set!

Before I show off the awesome Larkin card, here's the full set (according to Gavin's webpage).
1. Tony Gwynn
2. Luis Torrens
3. Robin Yount
4. Barry Larkin
5. Ken Griffey, Jr
6. Tim Wallach
7. Andrew McCutchen
8. Ron Cey
9. Tino Martinez

As you can see, Barry gets the #4 spot in the set - right before Ken Griffey Jr!  Without further ado, here's the custom card that Gavin created...

It's awesome!  Gavin said he created the set using Stadium Club for inspiration (full bleed photography, cool photos, etc.) and I'd say he nailed it.  I love this shot of Larkin, I presume it's of Barry celebrating the Reds winning their only World Series from my lifetime!

While the front of the card is undeniably great, I'm more honored by the back of the card:

It's not often you get your name (or blog's name in this case) mentioned on a baseball card - so this is pretty cool.  Plus it's a one-of-one so that means my Barry Larkin collection will always have something in it that no one else's will!  :)

Many, many thanks Gavin for including Barry in your custom set - and for sending me the card!

Speaking of cards sent by Gavin, there were a few non-custom cards in the envelope as well (including a couple of "official" Larkin cards).  First up, a Topps Gold Label card from 2000.

I love the Topps Gold Label brand - and if Topps were ever to reintroduce the brand I'd be one of the first to give it a try.

Gavin also including a serially numbered Donruss Elite "Passing the Torch" insert from 2004.

The card is numbered 204/500 and joins my small (but rapidly growing) collection of serially numbered Barry Larkin cards.

Many, MANY thanks Gavin!  You have no idea how much it made my day when I opened up your envelope!

2015 Upper Deck Dinosaurs: A Journey Through the Jurassic Era Continues

I'm back with another round of 2015 Upper Deck Dinosaur trading cards.  The box was a Christmas present for my wife - and I'm only allowing myself to open one pack at a time and then do the scanning and post writing before moving on to the next pack.  It's a giant test of my personal willpower to not rip through the entire box in one sitting but I will say that spreading it out and taking my time really adds a lot of extra fun to the entire box ripping process!

Yesterday I managed to get through the first two packs, let's see how far we get today!

Pack 03:
8.  Allosaurus

31.  Ouranosaurus
43.  Caudipteryx
47.  Tarbosaurus
114.  Jaekelopterus

No inserts in this pack but that Allosaurus picture is pretty cool, isn't it?!  I love the sunset imagery for one of the biggest, baddest dinos around.  The Jaekelopterus card is actually one of the short prints so I guess you can call that an insert.

For the record, the Dinosaurs set consists of 100 base cards plus 25 High Series Sea Creatures short prints (101 - 125) and 25 High Series Super SP Ice Age Creatures (126 - 150).

Pack 04:
21.  Therizinosaurus
28.  Prosaurolophus
58.  Tanystropheus

Mini:  108.  Kronosaurus

Sticker:  S-27.  Woolly Mammoth

That Mammoth sticker is pretty much the star of this pack - though I like that canvas mini SP as well!
Four packs through the box and I'm having a blast.  I don't care if these cards are meant for little kids - I think they are mighty cool.  It's been a fun rip so far, and there's something to be said for opening a box of cards just for the sheer fun of it.

Today's addition to the Trade Stack means the pile now sits at a whopping eleven cards!  Remember, the way the Trade Stack works is that you get ALL of the cards in the stack in exchange for at least a single card from my want list.  Simple right?

Today's addition to the pile is a pretty nice Red Sox card from 1994 - will it be enough to cause someone to claim the entire pile?  We'll find out soon enough!

If you want it, claim it!  Remember, you get the entire Trade Stack in exchange for at least one card off of my want list!

Christmas Cards! (Prehistoric Edition)

First, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday (or, for those that don't celebrate the day, hopefully you had a nice Friday and Saturday)!  Anyhow, I do celebrate Christmas and this year was one of the best yet - especially in regards to blog-related gifts!

First, I ended up receiving a number of holiday packages from generous bloggers - I will be sure to show them all off in due time!  Seriously though, the blogosphere is pretty much the best - a bunch of otherwise strangers taking the time to send thoughtful gifts to other strangers.  Pretty wonderful if you ask me - and if the world had more people like those that I correspond with, well, the world would be a much better place!

I also lucked out with my family - a number of baseball card boxes plus a brad new big LEGO set.  But again, all of that will have to wait because there was one other box of cards that I got that I can't wait to crack into.

And no, it's not a baseball box.  Heck, it's not even a sports box.  Instead, it is an Upper Deck Dinosaurs box.

I actually saw these on someone else's blog a ways back (apologies for not remembering where) and I added it to my virtual wish list.  Credit to my wife for remembering me mentioning the box...and for buying me a box for Christmas!

Obviously she's pretty awesome!  And now, it's time to find out how awesome this Dinosaurs box is!

Each pack of Dinosaur cards comes with 5 cards - and the box as a whole contains 20 such packs.  The "hits" in the box consist of sketch cards, fossil cards, and ROAR audio cards.  Personally, I'm just hoping for a bunch of cool dino cards!

Now, without any more delay, let's crack open a pack or two!

Pack 01:
16.  Sauroposeidon
65.  Monolophosaurus
71.  Camarasaurus
109.  Elasmosaurus

Sticker:  S-19.  Quetzalcoatlus

Each box of Dinosaur cards contains a number of inserts including sticker cards which are seeded 1:4 packs.  My first sticker of the box is of Quetzalcoatlus - and it's awesome!  The back of the sticker has what appears to be some sort of larger puzzle but for my money it's the background of the sticker itself which makes this a great looking card!  The little cave drawings are perfect - and Quetzalcoatlus is a pretty cool looking critter!

For the first pack, I'm going to say that it was a success!  However, I'm not stopping with only one pack today...

Pack 02:
27.  Giraffatitan
63.  Plateosaurus

Canvas mini:  46.  Dimorphodon

3-D Dinosaurs:  15.  Mussaurus

The Canvas minis are the same size as the typical Allen & Ginter mini card which means they will fit snugly in the 15 pocket pages (which I appreciate)!  The minis aren't terribly rare (1:2 packs) which is also nice since the canvas finish makes the minis feel pretty cool!

This pack also contained a second insert, one of the 3-D Dinosaurs cards, which are seeded 1:5 packs.  I'd say that was a pretty strong second pack!

So, after two packs I should say this:  I thought I knew quite a bit about dinosaurs...and yet I have only heard of a small fraction of the dinosaurs that I've received in the box so far!  The 3-D cards are done quite well - and I'm betting having the full set would look pretty sweet in a binder!  Overall, I'm pleased and I can't wait to crack the rest of the packs (which I will do soon)!  I'll also have to post a lot of my other Christmas loot including some really nice gifts from fellow bloggers!  Stay tuned for so much good stuff - all of the sudden I have a ton of blogging fodder!
