Theme Week: COM (die-cut) C

For whatever reason, the 2008 Upper Deck Timeline set caught my attention back when it was released.  I bought quite a bit of it from my local big box stores...so much so that I figured I might as well try and collect the full set (knowing full well that there were only 100 base cards and then a whopping 285 short printed cards.

That's freaking absurd and I'll never, EVER collect a set with a similar ration of base to short print like that again.  However, the die had long been cast and over the next decade (holy ****), I managed to slowly acquire most of the cards that I was still missing from the set.  Unfortunately though, the trade well eventually dries up for most older sets...and so 2008 Upper Deck Timeline has been languishing on my want list for quite some time without a single update to the cards needed.

Thanks to my recent COMC purchase, I can now report that I am oh-so-close to finally completing this cursed set.  In fact, I am now only ONE measly card away from the full set (if you are wondering, the final card that has eluded me to date is #336:  Evan Longoria.

The version of the Longoria that I am still missing is part of the subset based on the 1994 SP set.  I was also missing the Longoria from the 1995 SP subset...but not any longer.  In fact, I purchased Longoria plus the other five of his friends that I was missing from that particular subset.

As you can tell by the player names, this set hasn't aged particularly well.  The player selection in the set is actually quite terrible (for a set with almost 300 total cards).  Many players in the set have upwards of 7, 8, or even more cards.  Evan Longoria, for example, has 9 cards in the set.  Joey Votto has 8 and Kosuke Fukudome has 8 as well (including the one you see above which completed the Fukudome portion of the set for me).

In addition to the six cards you see above, I also bought two of the final three cards from the 1994 SP subset (the last card missing being the Evan Longoria that I mentioned already).

And that (almost) does it for both the 2008 UD Timeline set AND my recent COMC card purchase.  I have one more post for the COMC theme week...and in that post you'll see my favorite cards that I bought from the entire purchase!  Stay tuned for that.

PS:  If you are collecting the 2008 UD Timeline set...or if you want to masochistic and start collecting the thing...well, I've got a lot of extra cards available for trade from the set still.

  1. I finished the set a couple years back and if I recall correctly a Longoria was the last card I got to finish the set. Congrats on getting it so close.
