Today may be April 1, but you won't find any April Fool's Day shenanigans here. Instead, we are looking at a Golden Anniversary insert card of Barry Larkin from 2001 Topps. The Golden Anniversary insert set is a veritable "who's who" of MLB, both present and past (plus J.D. Drew). As for the card design, well, like most Topps' flagship inserts it's got too much foilboard and not enough class. I actually don't mind the back of the card, the 1984 team write-up stuff is actually quite nice and unique. It's the front of the card that looks like almost any other Topps' insert of the time - definitely entirely forgettable (maybe J.D. Drew was the right choice to put in the set after all).

At least it still looks pretty good, though it was a reasonable indicator of what was to come with the dearth of good Topps inserts over the next 15+ years, some of which weren't even reprints.
