Barry Larkin Collection 750: 2003 Topps Stadium Club - #USA-BL - Born in the USA Relic

Barry Larkin
Year:  2003
Brand:  Topps Stadium Club
Card number:  USA-BL
Insert set:  Born in the USA relic

For my 750th Barry Larkin Collection post, I decided it was time to show off this quirky relic card from the 2003 Topps Stadium Club set.  The Born in the USA relics are probably most notable for the fact that the relic "window" is cut into a rough approximation of the state that the featured player is from.  For Larkin, that means a window in the shape of Ohio since that's where he was born.

I actually like this relic set quite a bit, though I do wish there wasn't quite so much gray in the card design.  The card front is perfectly fine, the Born in the USA motif works well.  It's the card back that's a little bit too dull gray for me.  I guess the blue map of the USA is fine but there could have been some other design element rather than the grayed out map as well.

Overall, this is a rather unique addition to my Larkin Collection!  What makes it even more unique is that Barry wasn't even featured in the 2003 Stadium Club base set.  Instead, all Larkin collectors got is this one relic card out of the set.  On the bright side, that means I don't have to track down a whole lot of super tricky Stadium Club parallels so I guess I won't complain!

  1. That's a fun relic idea. I just peeped the checklist to see if any of the states gave Topps problems. New York without Long Island does look weird but not as weird as Michigan wthout the upper peninsula.

  4. I have a Terrence Long card from this set... but never really took the time to notice that the relic window was the shape of the state he came from. Great card to write about as we approach this holiday weekend.
