The Quest for a Complete 1888 Allen & Ginter Set Continues!

Loyal readers may recall that I once completed a set of original 1889 Allen & Ginter cards (50 Fish from American Waters - see here).  Once I finished that project, I decided to take on two new original Allen & Ginter set builds, the 1887 Flags of All Nations and the 1888 City Flags.  Today, I have another batch of City Flags to show off thanks to a semi-recent eBay purchase.

Amsterdam & Bremen

I ended up acquiring a total of six city flags and each featured city is a city that I've never visited.  Of the two cities above, I am probably most interested in visiting Amsterdam though I've loved both of my previous visits to Germany so maybe I should move Bremen up the ol' bucket list, too!

Genoa & Hamburg

Another German city in Hamburg that I haven't been to, though again, I'd like to visit some day.  I happen to like the Genoa image best out of the above pairing - that mountains and the sea make for a lovely little image.

Modena & Versailles

Modena is in northern Italy, a region of Italy that I've never had the opportunity to explore.  Versailles, of course, is in France which happens to be a country I've never stepped foot in.  As for the card images, I think I prefer the pastoral scenery of Modena, but honestly, both cards are quite nice!

With these six cards now in hand, I'm down to needing only ten more cards to complete the 1888 Allen & Ginter City Flags set!  It's hard to believe that I'm that close but then again, I never thought I'd finish the 1889 Fish set and yet I did.  Those old Ginter cards are definitely some of favorite things to collect currently so if you happen to have any unwanted Ginter from the late 1800s, let me know.  Who knows, maybe you'll inspire me as to which set I should start working on next?!

  1. Love these. Don't have any. Need to see which cities I want.

  2. Versailles is probably my favorite here, but as you said, they're all great.
