Sometimes All You Have to Do is Comment!

There are lots of reasons that people blog about baseball cards.

Some blog because they love to write.

Others because they are great writers and why not?

Some blog because they love sports cards.

Others love to complain about 'em.

Some blog because they like interacting with others.

Others because they like to show their collection is better than others.

Most of us blog because we fit into multiple categories...but the one thing that unites almost all of us is that we love the interaction of a community of like-minded individuals.

For example, to the best of my knowledge, no one in my town collects baseball cards or writes about them.  I've never had someone from my zip code (or even county) contact me wanting to do a trade.  I have, however, sent cards across the state, across the border to New York, across the country to California, across Canada, across the ocean to Hawaii, and across the other ocean to Europe.  Heck, I've even sent cards to Japan and Australia.

Despite all those various trade packages that I've mailed, I've never met a single blogger or trader "in the real world."  That doesn't mean that I don't consider many of those that I've traded with friends - some (such as Greg - aka Night Owl I've been trading with seemingly forever).  Others, like John from Johnny's Trading Spot are relatively new to my trade posts!  In all those cases, I have been able to make connections with fellow collectors who think like me, who collect like me, and who share some of the same passions as me.  That's a powerful thing - until I started blogging I was the only baseball collector I knew...now I know hundreds of other people, even if I never have actually met them in person.

Old or new though, I appreciate all my trade partners - and like old friends such as Greg (and countless others), John is quickly making his way to the blog friend list thanks to a series of recent trades.  However, today's post isn't actually a trade - it's instead a prize I won simply for commenting on Johnny's blog.

He ran a contest awhile back where all you had to do was comment - and comment a lot.  If you did so, you could win a few selected cards from his collection...and since he was offering up the three Topps Gold Label Sean Casey cards you see in this post, I had to jump in!

I think that was a great idea - and so I'm going to pay Johnny's Contest forward.

ON THIS POST ONLY, leave a comment (say anything you want) and leave a baseball team.  Later next week (basically when I get the chance with work), I'll randomize all those who left a comment and send a PWE full of cards of the mentioned team to that person.  And if you like this type of contest, go thank John since it was his idea originally!

  8. I was in the same boat before I started blogging. I didn't know anyone else that was a collector. At times I still wonder why I'm spending my hard earned money on pieces of paper with pictures of muscular men on them...haha...but reading the writings of all the other bloggers out there keeps me interested.

    Braves!

  10. Viva la Random! If not choosing a team is an option, it's my choice. Just cool cards work for me (in the unlikely event that I win). If I have to choose a team, make it Dodgers. Thanks!

  14. I'm happy that I have found a like-minded group of people who also are good writers -- and are friendly too. Thanks for running the box break too!

And, if by chance I would be so lucky to win, I'd love Brewers stuff.

And to all you Braves guys, let's get together at a Taco Mac somewhere and swap cards in person -- you know, without all that postage involved!

  15. Sometimes I wonder is there is a parallel blogging universe to the one that we all blog in. And in that universe there are bloggers and card collectors in OUR zip codes. Yet, they will remain parallel and the paths of bloggers and collectors will never intersect.

I have one deep thought every decade or so. You should feel privileged I left it here.
    Go Cubs!

  19. Cool trio of cards er Reds cards. Also when you comment on a blog it lets the blogger know that his posts are actually getting read by people other than himself. A blogger may have 100+ followers but that doesn't mean all of them are comment makers. On the other hand a blogger can have barely a dozen followers and all of them will comment every post.

Years ago in late elementary and Jr. High (yes I'm that old now they call it "Middle School") I had a friend who I used to "trade" with, we actually played one of those card tossing/flipping games where you tossed cards onto the floor and if your card covered up at least 1/2 of another card you got the cards. I have never met any other bloggers. Too new of a concept I guess. LOL.

    Nationals.

  21. I discovered Nachos Grande because I collect only Barry Larkin cards. I completed a couple of trades with him and enjoy reading his blog. I also love meeting fellow card collectors at card shows. My 10 year old son collects mostly football and we have a great time together going to various shows. Card collecting is a relatively cheap hobby unless you building a vintage set. It's also a great break from video games and a way to spend quality time with your kid.

  22. Here are the three biggest reasons I have for blogging...

    1. I use my blog as a diary. One day when I'm old, retired, and bored... I figure I'll go back and relive my favorite hobby.

    2. I enjoy meeting and interacting with other bloggers and the people who read my blog.

    3. I opens up opportunities to learn about card products, the industry, and of course stay up to date with current sports related topics.

Thanks for the contest... Oakland A's since the 70's.

  23. Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! I am always happy to get Indians cards! Or any cards. Any non-Tribers will go into the pack-a-day giveaway, of course! Well, unless they go in my "non-tribers" collection. I'd have to think about those. Where was I? Oh, yeah. Pick me! Indians! Wahoo!! Let's Go Cleveland! Hmm, I guess I have to call them the "Block C's" now, eh...
