Tim, from Better Luck Next Pack, recently sent me an envelope filled with assorted Reds cards. Tim's a big Indians fan - and he's got a package full of Cleveland players heading his way shortly! It's like the all-Ohio trade express!
Since Tim sent me a bunch of Reds from a variety of years, let's take a look through the way back machine shall we?
1992 Score:
Joe Oliver
According to the back of the card, Chris Sabo said the following about Oliver: "He gets his pitch, he can hit the ball hard. He gives us some punch at the bottom of the batting order." Oliver's contribution in '91 was a .216 average with 11 doubles and 11 homers. I think that's one step above a slap, and most definitely not a punch.
2009 and 2010 Topps 206:
Johnny Cueto
Although I don't know how much of a punch Cueto packs, I do know he packs quite a kick. Just ask poor Jason LaRue (or any Cardinals fan for that matter).
1970 Topps:
Danny Breeden & Bernie Carbo
1970 was a little over a decade before my time, so I couldn't tell you a thing about either of these guys (except that they were apparently rookies for the Reds). Breeden looks like his photo was taken at night in the dark...shouldn't those stadium lights over his right shoulder be on? Poor Carbo, on the other hand, had his photo taken in the middle of the day when he couldn't see anything.
2010 Upper Deck:
Jay Bruce
Is it any surprise that Upper Deck got in so much trouble for their baseball cards last year? Seriously, you can see the Reds logo on Bruce's hat and some of the logo on his shoulder. I also think green parallels don't work terrible well with the Reds - unless it's some sort of Pacific Christmas ornament set.
1990 The Star Co.
Eric Davis
I have no idea what set this card came from. The back claims it is 1 of 1,000 sets for whatever that is worth. I can't imagine the set saw a repeat performance the next year unless they drastically cut down on the amount of pink used on a baseball card.
There were a bunch of other Reds cards in the envelope, but those were the ones that really caught my eye. Thanks for the trade Tim - and as usual, if anyone else would like to trade, check out my want list and make an offer!
