2024 Bowman Heritage Break, Anyone?

Barry Larkin Collection 684: 2002 Fleer - #176

Barry Larkin
Year:  2002
Brand:  Fleer
Card number:  176

The 2002 Fleer set is sort of a Fleer Tradition-lite set.  By the time 2002 rolled around, Fleer had been producing cards under the Fleer Tradition banner for awhile so the "regular" Fleer retro set was sort of a toy on an island of misfits.  It's no surprise that this idea was scrapped a year later by Fleer (the company kept the Fleer Tradition line going in 2003).

As for the card itself, I guess it's nice enough if you love cards featuring the US flag and colors.  Larkin's front image isn't great (neither player is looking at the camera nor is the baseball present).  The back is also one of the most boring backs I've seen in quite some time - absolutely no write-up (but I do appreciate the full career statistics which by 2002 was a long list for Barry)!

For me, 2002 Fleer is entirely forgettable.  As usual, I'm happy to get the Barry Larkin card but I don't have any desire to buy more of this product for my collection.  Too bad for me that are three parallels out there of Larkin's base card (a Tiffany #/200, a mini #/50, and a gold ink parallel that isn't serially numbered) that I still have to track down.  Maybe someday...but no rush on the rest of this set.
