30 MLB Teams in 30 Posts - 2022 Edition: #29

Welcome back to the next post in my 30 MLB Teams in 30 Posts countdown (plus the contest - see the bottom of the post for details on that).

Yesterday, I kicked off my countdown of MLB teams as I rank them heading into the 2022 season.  The Cardinals kicked us off in the worst possible position which brings us to the second-worst-team-in-all-of-baseball and I think you'll (mostly) agree with me that it has to be the New York Yankees.

#29:  New York Yankees (Previous Rankings - 2019, 2020: # 29, 30)

The Yankees avoided the basement of my rankings in 2019 thanks to St. Louis and again this year it was the Cardinals that kept New York out of the cellar.  That being said, if New York ends up winning the World Series you can probably safely bet that they'll be #30 next year.

The Yankees fall into a general category of teams for me such as the Lakers and the Cowboys.  Overly cocky fanbases, too much money, and a sense of entitlement based on past successes but not necessarily anything overly recent.  The Cowboys, for instance, still act like they are the best team in the NFL despite being objectively quite terrible for the better part of two decades.  For me, the Yankees are similar - the days of Ruth, Mantle, and Maris are over...as are the days of Jeter, Rivera, and Posada for that matter.  As such, until New York starts winning multiple championships in short order, they can step back a bit and calm down with the bravado.

On the other hand, I will give the Yankees a bit of credit...at least they have historically had an owner who actively tries to win.  More than we can say about the Reds...and yes, I'm extra salty these days about Reds' ownership (and some of the comments put out by the ownership).

My 2022 MLB Rankings (so far):
#30:  St. Louis Cardinals
#29:  New York Yankees
#28:  ??

Contest entries to date (see here for details):
Brett Alan 2
Crocodile 2
Fuji 2
hiflew 2
The Lost Collector 2
John Sharp 1
madding 1
Matt 1
Wilson 1

That does it for today...who will be #28 in my rankings?  As a hint, we'll stay in the American League for this one.

  1. Hah, I didn't see this when I just guessed on the last post (I'm ineligible for that one anyway). ... Yankees always last or second-to-last for me. Where I live, signs of their stench are everywhere. You either resist it with all your might or surrender and become one of the pod people. ... My guess is the Red Sox.

  2. Yeah, it's gotta be the Red Sox. I guess Nachos doesn't subscribe to the idea that the enemy of my enemy is my friend!

  3. Yeah, get my Red Sox done and over with already! ;)

  4. Ok, I'll jump on the Red Sox bandwagon :)

  5. I guess I will have to make it unanimous and go with Boston @28.

The Yankees now to me are very reminiscent of when they would interview Charles Manson in prison before he died. You knew he was a very evil and scary person at one time, but by the time I saw he was just an old man. The Yankees are starting to fall into that category for me.

  6. If I was going in blindly... I would have said the Astros. But I went back and looked at last year's rankings, so I'm with everyone else: Red Sox.

  7. I thought maybe the Giants would go into the #28 spot but then they earned a lot of respect for having Alysa Nakken become the first female on-field coach. So I'll also go with the Red Sox.

  8. Red Sox is the correct guess! Everyone was correct!
