Board Game Friday: Results of a Large BoardGameGeek Trade

I recently completed a fairly large trade over on BoardGameGeek with user Mikeybh72.  I sent off a large box game called Altar Quest (along with a second large box of "stretch goal" parts) and an expansion to a different game.  For me, a big part of the trade was clearing off some shelf space for some of my own games as well as a chance to acquire some smaller games (many of which I hope to be able to play with my son).

Outgoing:
  • Altar Quest
  • Altar Quest Stretch Goals
  • Tiny Epic Dungeons:  Stories expansion

In terms of stuff outgoing, Altar Quest was a big Kickstarter game that I backed (I already summarized that here).  Unfortunately, I didn't see any way that I'd be getting that game to the table anytime within the next several years so parting with it wasn't as difficult as you might otherwise think.  The Tiny Epic Dungeons expansion was another one that was relatively easy to let go seeing as how I didn't love the base game (and I don't think the expansion added anything that would change my mind).

Incoming:
  • The Adventures of Robin Hood
  • Bärenpark
  • Dragonrealm
  • Friday
  • Heroes of Terrinoth
  • Kingdomino
  • Kingdomino: Age of Giants
  • Naturopolis
  • Naturopolis: Nessie
In terms of raw game count, obviously I ended up with way more games but truth-be-told, the list is deceiving big time.  For starters, Naturopolis and it's expansion Nessie fit within a "wallet" of cards.  In addition, Kingdomino and its expansion are packaged together as well.  Friday is another small box game (and it's solo only).

As for the games themselves, so far I've played Naturopolis and Kingdomino.  Naturopolis is a wallet-sized game that I played solo.  Based on my first impression, it's perfectly fine though we'll see what I think of it after a few more plays (I'll either learn to love it more or else it'll end up in a future trade stack).  Kingdomino, however, is a sure-fire winner for me.  My son and I have enjoyed playing this one a lot, it's a game he can play and do well at while still being perfectly fun for adults.  Simple in execution, but just enough to think about to keep it interesting.

Overall, in terms of monetary value I probably lost out here pretty badly.  However, in terms of practical value I traded away three games/expansions that I'll probably never play in exchange for a number of games that I've now already played.  Kingdomino, while simple, is perfect to play with my son right now and Bärenpark should also be fun to play with him.  In addition, the pile of games that I got back will take up less storage space overall as compared to the games I got rid of - so yeah, overall, this was probably a winning trade for both parties!

Comments

  1. We love Kingdomino in our house. We also bought the expansion Queendomino, but it didn't gameplay it added wasn't my favorite. We mostly use Queendomino now just to have an extra player or two.

  2. Cool trade. Even if board games aren't really my thing... I totally can relate to the idea that practical value can sometimes be way more important than monetary value.
