Don't Strongarm Me, Man!

A few weeks ago, I attempted to work out a trade on TCDB for a Barry Larkin card I needed.  Unfortunately, the person who had the card knew I was a Barry Larkin collector and thus tried to strongarm me into giving up way more than the particular Larkin card was worth.  I don't usually mind "paying" a bit more in trade value for cards I want (I figure I'm getting rid of stuff I don't want so that's worth something to me) BUT I'm not interested in being totally fleeced for what is a not particularly valuable card.

So, given that experience I decided to see if I could grab the card in question off of eBay instead.  And, as luck would have it, there was one readily available for cheap.  And thus, my Barry Larkin Collection grows once again:

That's a 1st Edition parallel card from the 2000 MLB Showdown set.  You can't easily tell from the scan but the card has a lovely foil sheen to it.  I'm a big fan of the MLB Showdown sets - I even remember buying one of the starter sets and trying to actually play the game when I was younger!  Definitely happy to have this one in the collection, even if the only difference between this and Larkin's regular card from the set is that tiny little 1st Edition stamp near the bottom of the card!

One last note about this card:  By acquiring it, I am now just over 50% of the way through collecting all Barry Larkin cards from the year 2000 (I currently own 87 of the 173 cards, good for 50.29% of the batch).  Of course, my totals only include cards with a stated print run of at least 25 copies - anything rarer than that and I don't bother with it!

  1. Understand the trade conundrum. Had someone offer me an equal number of common cards (most players I've never even heard of) for all star inserts. Like you I considered it, but just felt like I was getting fleeced so, I didn't do it. Congrats on picking up another Larkin!

  2. Haven't encountered very many strong-arm tactics on TCDB yet. There's almost always another cheaper option somewhere.

  3. Happens with me as well from time to time with Tino. I've done what you did as well...fine, I'll just buy it elsewhere! Good job staying strong!

  4. That's awesome you found a cheap copy on eBay! I would also rather just buy it than have to get worked over in a trade.

  5. People like that should have their trading privileges revoked.
