Board Game Friday: Bringing Back the Magic (TM)

Over the past month or so, my son has gotten into playing Magic: the Gathering.  Yes, that old card game is still going strong all these years later!  Back when I was a kid, I dabbled in playing Magic (mostly with my siblings).  Unfortunately, most of my old cards are completely underpowered compared to the stuff Wizards of the Coast prints now, which means if I'm to compete with my son, I occasionally need to acquire some new cards to augment my old decks.

Case in point:  This week, I grabbed a few cheap rares to upgrade my Angel deck to something with a bit more power!

There was a couple-year period where I played Magic on the computer via Magic Arena.  My main online deck at the time ran Bishop of Wings, so I have a fond spot in my heart for the card.  I also grabbed a lone copy of Giada because it seemed like a fun inclusion into any Angels deck!

It's nice to be able to find a new use for my old, dusty Magic cards, even if it means I need to add to the decks a bit to make them have a chance against new Magic cards (seriously, the power creep is unreal to me)!  All said, it's another fun game to play with my son (and it sure beats Pokémon, I can tell you that)!

  1. Love reading posts where parents are hanging out with their children and doing cool stuff like playing games. I've never played MTG, but I know that some of the singles sell for crazy money. Was hanging out with a buddy who set up at a local card show yesterday and he bought a single off of another guy for $100. He tried to explain the significance, but it didn't mean anything to me. I think the only MTG cards I own are the three Doctor Who cards I recently added to my collection. But now that I think about it... I'm not even 100% sure they're MTG cards :D

  2. My kids went through a Magic phase which was killed by the year Covid-mandated distancing. I enjoyed playing with them but also found the game frustrating because of the luck of the draw that involved getting creatures when you need mana and mana when you need creatures.
