I recently completed another trade with Jack from All Tribe Baseball. He and I have sent countless packages back and forth - we both seem to have a knack for pulling cards of the other person's team. I guess Ohio cards can't tell the difference between a Reds fan and an Indians fan. You can see his end of the swap here - now it's time for me to show off some of my goodies.
Jack sent me a bunch of Barry Larkin cards - including some brand new ones for my collection which I'll show off in Post #2 of the trade.
For now, let's look at a Top 10 of the "Best of the Rest":
#10: Topps Attax - Dodger Stadium
I'm trying to collect the entire 2011 Topps Attax set - a set that I thought would be a piece of cake to finish off. At the moment, I still need 17 cards (including the Dodger Stadium card above). I've been only keeping the non-foil version for my sets because I'm sort of OCD like that...but are there non-foil versions of cards like Dodger Stadium? If not, then this will have to do...though the foil will forever bug me nestled in among a page of foil-less cards. For the record, here's what else I need from the set:
#9: Triple Play - Bip Roberts
This is the last of Bip that you'll see in the countdown. This one gets the nod for the back of the card - look at Bip going all "respect your elders" on everyone. I imagine a few years later his card said "get off my lawn."
#8: Topps Coin - Eric Davis
I don't do a lot of hunting down non-baseball card items of the Reds (except for Barry Larkin of course). However, I have to admit that this coin is kind of cool. I'm not sure how to store it - I know coin pages exist but it seems like a waste to buy a box of pages for what will amount to very few coins in my collection.
#7: 1998 UD Retro - Tony Perez
The '98 UD Retro set is another set that I'm currently working on completing. I didn't happen to need Mr. Perez but there are a bunch of cards remaining missing from my collection, namely:
#6: 1993 Upper Deck SP - Bip Roberts
Check out that sweet jacket! Doesn't that scream 90s to you? I remember wanting one of those Starter jackets back when I was a kid in the 90s. Looking back, it's good my parents never shelled out the type of coin that it would have taken to secure such a hideous coat.
#5: 2008 Opening Day - Ken Griffey Jr.
Griffey Jr. has some of the absolute best baseball cards. Even a simple shot like this "top step dugout shot" is great. Maybe it's his charismatic smile, maybe it's the fact that The Kid is the man...I dunno but it's a great card. The red border makes it that much better - the Opening Day set looks much, much better than it's '08 flagship counterpart.
#4: 1987 Boardwalk and Baseball - Dave Parker
I have no idea what this card is all about. It's manufactured by Topps but called "Boardwalk and Baseball Offical Collector's Set." No matter, oddball Reds cards are always appreciated - and I'm sure someday I'll figure what exactly the set was all about!
#3: 1993 Upper Deck SP - Chris Sabo
I know I've spoken about my fondness for "Spuds" before on the blog so I won't rehash that. Instead, I'll just say that this is a tremendous card - I really seem to like the '93 UD SP set. I don't think I had any cards from that set until Jack's package arrived.
#2: 2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces - Joe Morgan
This list is a veritable "Who's Who" of Reds stars isn't it? The '08 Masterpieces set is gorgeous - and it's another set that I'm still working on completing. Since I've already begged twice, might as well make it thrice. Here's what I need from this set (at least here I'm close to completing the set!):
#1: 2009 UD Piece of History - Johnny Cueto - #299/999
The UD Piece of History set didn't do much for me when it was released. I believe I bought a single pack (or maybe it was a single blaster - I forget now). Either way, the set was met with a collective "meh" and then I moved on. That said, the colored parallels are quite nice - and being able to acquire a numbered parallel of one of the Reds best pitchers of the last 20 years?
Well, that's a number one card indeed!
Thanks for the great trade Jack! I hope to get the second half of the trade (all Larkins) posted before too long. And, as always, if anyone else would like to trade - check out my want list and make an offer!
