Delivery Time! No Need to Wait 'til Next Year, this Package Arrived this Year!!

My post titles get cheesier and cheesier, don't they?  Hey, they don't call me Nachos Grande for nothin'!

Today's package of cards is courtesy of Tom over at Waiting 'til Next Year.  Tom's a Cubs fan and I have a feeling he won't have to wait much longer for the Cubs to become really, really good (which isn't good news for my Reds since they share the division with the Cubs)!

However, today's post isn't about the Cubs.  No, it's actually a birthday present of sorts from Tom (in his words, a way to clean out his trade box).  Tom ended up sending me a rather full envelope full of cards - all of which were Reds from various years and makes.

For the longest time, I loved getting packages like that - just a bunch of random Reds.  However, as I've recently tried to cut back on my collection I find myself less and less excited when someone just sends a stack of random Reds, usually I end up having them all (and the ones I might not have are generally not of interest to me).  And while that is all true, I have to admit that Tom managed to send me a stack of random Reds with plenty of cards to keep me interested!  In fact, there were so many goodies in the pile that it was hard for me to pick a reasonable number to scan!

We'll begin with this 2011 Topps Heritage Minor League card of Billy Hamilton.

I went all in on the 2011 Heritage MLB set, but I didn't bother purchasing a single pack of the Minor League set.  While I still have no plans to ever buy the Minor League set (or any other Minor League set for that matter), I will happily add this card to my collection!

Next, we have an oddball of sorts from 1990 Baseball Cards magazine.

This one is an Eric Davis card that someone cut out of the magazine with a level of skill that I am positive I would not have been able to replicate (especially not in 1990 when I was eight years old)!  I always liked Eric Davis so this is another keeper for me!

From something fairly old to something fairly new, how about a 2015 Panini Diamond King card?

For my money, the 2015 Panini Diamond King set might be the best set of 2015.  That is, it would be if it had actual logos.  Sorry Panini, for as much as I love the Diamond King set, I cannot overlook the fact that there are no logos!  Even so, I'll happily acquire the Reds from the set - and that includes guys like Yorman Rodriguez with the fake Rookie Card logo!

Tom sent me a number of other cards from recent years but only one of those appears to include a dirty sock embedded in it!

That's a 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter relic of Brandon Phillips.  When I first looked at the relic bit, I thought it was a bat given how brown the piece is...but no, it's actually fabric.  This seems to be a dirty sock, or maybe a dirty bit of pants!  I'm not sure how I feel about Topps not washing the clothes before chopping them up and gluing them to baseball cards but it's certainly unique at least!

And finally, we end with a pair of Barry Larkins.

I already owned the O-Pee-Chee card (write up here) but the Topps Magazine card was brand new for my Barry Larkin Collection!  Tom's package is the second package this week that has provided me with a new Barry Larkin card...it's like Christmas came early (or, I guess it's really a belated birthday present since Tom said that my birthday was the perfect excuse to send me a big 'ol stack of Reds)!

Many thanks for all the great cards Tom - you definitely filled a bunch of holes in my collection, and that new Larkin was the icing on the proverbial cake!  As for anyone else, if you'd like to trade with me be sure to check out my want list and then make an offer!

  1. Billy Hamilton looks like a tee-baller with that helmet - it looks like it's going to topple off if he moves his head at all. Also, why don't magazines have baseball cards anymore? Why?
