What to Do When Your Team Trades a Player You (Sort of) Collect?

My poor, pitiful Cincinnati Reds are in the midst of a supposed rebuilding year.  I say supposed because from what I can tell they aren't really building anything...more like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic (Alfredo Simon anyone?).

Anyhow, for as rough as this MLB season is shaping up to be as a fan, it's also shaping up to be a tough one as a baseball card collector.  Many of my loyal readers probably know that I'm a set collector first, a Barry Larkin collector second, and then a Reds' collector a distant third...or at least that's always how I describe myself.

Did you know, however, that I actually have a healthy sampling of cards for a variety of other players?  For instance, I don't consider myself a Ken Griffey Jr. collector at all...and yet I still have a rather large stack of Griffey cards set aside.  The same goes for Adam Dunn, Joey Votto, and quite a few others.

One of those "others" was Todd Frazier.  In fact, I had this small stack all set aside for a slowly growing Frazier collection...

...and then Reds ended up trading him to the White Sox for (virtually) nothing.

So the question remains:  What does a guy do when a player you collect gets traded?  I really have no interest in acquiring Frazier-as-a-White-Sox cards...and so I guess I'll now throw these cards in with the rest of my random Reds cards.

What do you do in such a scenario?  Do you keep up with your players when they switch teams?  Am I just lucky that my actual favorite player of all-time (Larkin) spent his entire career wearing the Cincinnati jersey?

  1. As an Andrelton Simmons collector I will accept his Angels cards.

As bad as the Reds are they are not the Braves so feel good about that at least. :)

  2. If Frazier is a guy that I wanted to collect (liked him as a player), then I would keep on collecting him.

If you collected him only because he was a Reds player, then cut the cord...so to speak

  3. Just an FYI - thank you for Frazier.

  4. I just collect cards of anyone who's ever played for the Cubs, whether or not the card depicts them as such. That way, I never have this problem.

  5. If you are a player collector I think it is fair game to continue on.

  6. I thought I would continue collecting Mark Trumbo after the Angels traded him. Nope. Quickly lost interest in him on cards for other teams.

  7. Thanks for the input all! I have decided not to continue collecting Frazier at all - the cards of his that I currently own will be going into my FrankenReds set (once I get around to making that set, that is). More on that project to come!

  8. For me it depends on why I collect a certain player in the first place. Plenty of players I currently collect are Braves players or at least used to be. Some of them I stopped collecting after they left or were traded, while others I kept collecting because of different reasons. Take Jeff Francoeur for example. I've always love the way the guy plays the game so when the Braves let him go, I still sought out his cards as a Royals or Phillies player. When Alex Wood was traded to the Dodgers, I quit collecting him even though he is from my hometown of Charlotte, NC.

  9. To me it all depends on who it is
