Barry Larkin Collection 696: 2002 Fleer Triple Crown - #11

Barry Larkin
Year:  2002
Brand:  Fleer Triple Crown
Card number:  11

A lot of collectors bemoan the fact that Topps has an exclusive MLB license in the baseball card market but as a counterpoint to their complaint I would point them to 2002, specifically Fleer's products in 2002.  Now, for many years I liked (and collected) Fleer's stuff but in 2002 it sure did seem like they made a mad cash grab with little to no effort on the majority of their sets that the released.

I mean, just look at that Triple Crown card design.  It's too dark, the photo selection on both the front and back of the card is suspect at best, and to my eyes the front and back designs don't complement each other at all.  Add in a few random horizontal bars on the card front for no reason whatsoever and you basically get a "here's what not to do" example for a handbook on custom card creation.

  1. I definitely agree that this isn't a nice design and that Fleer was as guilty as everyone else in producing too many sets back then, but now we have Topps producing too many unattractive sets! (Not all of Panini's are exactly winners, to be fair).
