Barry Larkin Collection 704: 2002 MLB Showdown Trading Deadline - #42

Barry Larkin
Year:  2002
Brand:  MLB Showdown Trading Deadline
Card number:  42

The MLB Showdown set had a couple of "expansion" sets in 2002:  Pennant Run and Trading Deadline.  I've already shown off Larkin's card from the Pennant Run set so now it's time to turn our attention to the Trading Deadline version.

For Trading Deadline, Larkin gets the foil treatment which means his card is one of the short prints in the set.  Unfortunately for Larkin fans, the MLB Showdown version of Larkin is worse in terms of game play values as compared to the Pennant Run version.  For example, on the Trading Deadline card Larkin makes an out (of some sort) on rolls of 1-7, walks on rolls of 8 - 13, singles on rolls of 14 - 18, doubles on rolls of 19-24, and homers only on rolls of 25+.  Of course, since you are rolling a 20-sided die in this game you can't get a 25 or higher without using some combination of strategy cards.

On the other hand, using Larkin's Pennant Run card he still makes outs (of some sort) on rolls of 1-7 but then walks on 8-11, singles (or singles+) on rolls of 12-16, doubles on either a 17 or 18, triples on a 19, and homers on 20 or above.  Clearly having the chance to homer without using special strategy cards is nice but it's actually the rest of the stats that push that card over the edge which is kind of too bad since I prefer the foil version of the Trading Deadline set!
