30 MLB Teams in 30 Posts: #29

Yesterday, I kicked off my countdown of MLB teams as I rank them heading into the 2020 season.  In what is probably only a minor surprise, the New York Yankees claimed the bottom slot (they were #29 on my 2019 list).  Today, we see who replaces New York in the #29 slot and it's none other than the Yankees arch nemesis:  the Boston Red Sox

#29:  Boston Red Sox  (#26 in 2019)

As a lifelong Reds fan, I have a natural disdain for a lot of the "big market" teams, especially teams that seem to hog the limelight (whether that be games on ESPN or simply larger shares of baseball card products).  The Yankees are the king of being over-saturated in all those markets but what's a king without a queen?

That's right Boston, you are the queen to the Yankees king.
Want a chance to win this card?  See my post on team #30 for full details.

Boston almost ended up in spot #30 this year for two reasons.  First, the whole cheating thing involving the Astros also ended up involving Boston (perhaps to a lesser extent but the cheating was still there).  In addition, I find it kind of pathetic that Boston is crying "poor" this off-season and trying to unload players like Mookie Betts in an effort to save some extra dollars.  There's no way Boston is losing money right now...and if anything, their fans deserve to see the Red Sox spend money to try and keep up with New York, not sell off their stars.

Despite Boston being (almost) at the bottom of my rankings, there are a few redeeming things about Boston.  For starters, they usually play the Yankees tough - and it'd be great if they could somehow spoil the 2020 Yankees' season (though New York looks to be too much of a powerhouse for that to happen).  I also would like to get to a baseball game at Fenway at some point in my lifetime.  I've been within a couple of blocks of Fenway exactly once during the one weekend that I was in Boston.

So who's next in my rankings?  So far, we've had two teams that have done worse than they did in 2019 (the Yankees went down 1 spot and Boston went down 3 spots).  Will the bottom continue to get shuffled up or will start to stabilize to how I had teams ranked last year?  Only one way to find out, stay tuned!

My 2020 MLB Rankings (so far):
#30:  New York Yankees
#29:  Boston Red Sox
#28:  ??

  1. I never disliked the BoSox, that is, until the "SOX NATION" thing started.

    Team #29... Dodgers.

    Good job!

  2. Like I said yesterday, I'm going to keep guessing the Cardinals until they appear.

I generally root for the Red Sox, as my brother's a fan. My wife isn't a big baseball fan, but she got into the Red Sox run in 2004 (right after we got together) and wore a Red Sox t-shirt for years after that. As for Betts, I just wish the Mets weren't so cheap and would trade for him!

    1. Knowing that I'm a Reds fan, that's a legitimate strategy!

  3. If the Red Sox trade Mookie Betts then I'll have absolutely no interest in them.
I'll stick with the big market teams... Cubs for #28. Although, missing the playoffs maybe made them somewhat more palatable? Nah. Probably not.

  4. Going with the NL this time--Giants stay at # 28

  5. I've resigned myself to Mookie getting traded, which is sad because he is exactly the kind of player you want to keep on your team.

I'm going to guess the cheating scandal makes a huge difference and say the Astros drop all the way to #28.

  6. I didn't get my guess on before, but I was considering the Red Sox. Going by some of your commentary on this team, I'm gonna have to guess Cubs at #28.

  7. I don't mind the Red Sox. I think it's because they're the Yankees biggest rival and I can't stand them.

  8. Congrats to Brett for working his strategy and guessing team #28 successfully!
