Barry Larkin Collection 717: 2003 Donruss Champions - #68

Barry Larkin
Year:  2003
Brand:  Donruss Champions
Card number:  68

The year 2003 was not a great year for baseball cards or memorabilia as that was the year that Donruss paid in excess of $264,000 for Babe Ruth jersey which it then cut up into little bits to insert into 2,100 memorabilia cards. On the baseball card front, I find much of 2003 to be uninspiring designs - so much so that it's one of the few years since I've been born where I don't have at least one full set in my collection.

The 2003 Donruss Champions set isn't awful, especially for the time period but it certainly has its share of flaws.  The front design is alright though the photos seem abnormally grainy to me.  The backside is also adequate, though again it's brought down by a single year's worth of statistics (seriously Donruss)?!

In addition to the base card shown above, Donruss also made a couple of parallels (Metalized #/100 and HoloFoil #/25).  Collectors who bought product at the Atlantic City National Card Show in 2003 could also get packs containing Atlantic City National logos which were numbered out of only 5.

In terms of other Larkin cards in the set, Barry is part of the signature set which is actually a partial parallel of the base set.  That said, Larkin only apparently signed nine copies of his card so I'm guessing I won't ever acquire that!  Finally, Larkin was part of the Notation partial parallel set but again his cards are rare.  In fact, there is only one Notation card out there for Barry.

Between the lackluster design and artificial shortage of most of the Barry Larkin cards in the set, the less said about 2003 Donruss Champions the better as far as I'm concerned.

  1. Donruss cards should have five years of stats.
