Just for Fun: 2014 Topps Stadium Club - Best Card Competition (Cards 109 - 144)

I'm back with the next four pages out of my 2014 Topps Stadium Club binder.  I have to say, this has been a fun exercise and a great way to relive older sets.  Of course, it helps that with a set like Stadium Club there's multiple great cards on almost every single page!

For me, this page comes down to a pair of legends.  Either the black and white Duke Snider of the glorious 70s color of Johnny Bench.

My Reds bias may show through here but I think you'll agree with me if you look at the Bench card closely...my goodness there's some wonderful hair in that photo!

I like the yellow and green of the Sonny Gray as well as the ivy on the Andre Dawson.  Both are fairly typical looking baseball cards though as compared to the Jose Bautista "golf" card.

On what is one of the weaker pages in the set so far, I had to give the nod to the unique golf shot.

Wow!  I'd say that almost half of the cards on this page are better than that Bautista which won the previous page.  If you are counting at home, I say the Clemente, Hanley, Pedroia, and Ted Williams are all better than the golf shot of Jose.  For me, the title of "Best Card on Page 15" boils down to the two black-and-white photos.  The Ted Williams military shot versus the classic Clemente hitting image.

The fact that Ted's plane is in the photograph is what pushed the Ted Williams card to the winner's circle for me.  Both the Williams and the Clemente cards are tremendous though and I'm certainly happy to own both in my set!

I had completely forgotten about that Evan Gattis card until I flipped to this page in my set binder.  I do seem to recall that the Gattis had people talking on the blogs back in 2014...and in a sea of mostly "typical looking" cards on this page, Gattis moves on to the next round.

I'm not sure the taxidermy special is going to be enough for Gattis to win the entire Best Card Competition but I think it certainly deserves some consideration.

That does it for those four pages.  As usual, I'd love to hear your picks...Did I make the right choices this time or do you think I'm a fool?  Let me know!

  4. Mattingly (I hate to pick a Yankee, but what a great perspective), Gordon (love those Royals powder blues, and, no, I don't want a player golfing on a baseball card), Ramírez, Boggs (I'll take 20 cards of baseball players golfing over one of one wearing a hunting trophy! Yuck!)

  5. All the same picks again! Although I seriously considered The Hawk over Bautista. However, it seems like they put Andre in front of a ivy backdrop.

  6. The Duke.
    Miggy.
    Teddy Ballgame.
    Chicken Man.

I'm an old school guy, so I favor all the Black & White cards.

    Good Job. 👍
