The first group of votes in the knock out round are complete and three of my four choices prevailed. In the end, I'm naming the Eddie Murray card the winner over the Jose Reyes card (which was my original choice).
Now, let's look at next group of pairings:
#42 Jackie Robinson vs. #167 Dominic Brown
If this were a competition based on player popularity, it'd be no contest. Unfortunately for Jackie, this particular competition is for the best card in the set...which in Stadium Club terms basically means best photograph, framing, etc.
That said, for as much as I like the viewpoint of the Dominic Brown card (it's almost as if the viewer is the next in line to interview Brown), you really can't beat the image of Jackie signing autographs for the fans. Even better, look at all the people in the dugout. The 2014 Stadium Club set has a lot of great cards but this Jackie Robinson is a clear front-runner for "best card" in my book! Jackie moves on.
#50 Mike Trout vs. #159 Mariano Rivera
Two great players, two nice celebratory shots. For me, the Rivera card is nice but the Trout image seems more authentic and more of what I love about baseball (teamwork, games during the day, etc.). I think Mike Trout edges out Rivera here for me.
#57: Jayson Werth vs. #148 Salvador Perez
Mike Trout won the previous match-up based on his image being more of what I like about baseball...and for as good as the Trout card is, that Werth card is 10x better! The colors, the sun, the patriotism, the celebration. It's all there and it's wonderful. The Salvador Perez shot is certainly nice as well but for me this one is no contest, Werth all the way.
#66 Matt Cain vs. #141 Evan Gattis
The Gattis card had to be the most talked about card when 2014 Stadium Club was released, of that there's no doubt. But is it actually the best card in the set? That's the question we are trying to answer! For me, Gattis does defeat the Matt Cain card, mostly because as much as I do like the image on Cain's card, I don't like that it isn't actually clear who the subject of the card is. If you don't know your Giants, you have no way of knowing which of the three fellows is actually Matt Cain. Even if that doesn't bother you, I think the Gattis card beats three guys hanging out up against a dugout railing.
And that's the next round of voting! Let me know in the comment section your votes, perhaps the group consensus will make me change which card moves on to the next round (which happened once already in the previous round).
Comments
I'm with you on all of them but Werth. I think I like the Perez dugout shot more.
ReplyDeleteJackie takes the first one. Both very nice cards.
ReplyDeleteMo in the second, a little more comfortably despite my anti-Yankee bias. I think the Trout doesn't quite focus on him enough, but it's still quite nice.
I'd be happy to never see another celebration card again, with how overused they are, but these are pretty good examples. At least it's clear who is supposed to be the focus. I'll agree on Werth being nicer.
The last one, aggh, there are the kind of cards I hate. Why is "Matt Cain" three people? Why is someone on a baseball card wearing a bear? I'm voting for the Cain on the grounds that it COULD be a nice card if it were just redone as a multi-player card. The Gattis is just stupid. I mean, I understand some people like that stuff, and more power to you, but to me that's just ridiculous.
Robinson, Trout, Perez, Gattis.
ReplyDeleteThe Jackie is my favorite card in this post... so he's my pick over Brown. As for the others... I'd go with Mo (although I wish it were zoomed out a little more), Salvadore (love the dugout celebration), and the Cain w/Mad Bum & (I'm pretty sure) Tim Hudson.
ReplyDelete- Jackie Robinson
ReplyDelete- Mike Trout
- Salvador Perez
