Barry Larkin
Year: 1990
Brand: Star Gold
Card number: 98
We've reached the eighth (out of nine) Barry Larkin card in the 1990 Star Gold set. If you missed card #97, I showed that off here. For card #98, Star Gold decided to highlight Barry's single-game best totals for his career. I think my favorite is that his highest number of stolen bases in a game was 2 but it happened "many times." The 21-game hitting streak is probably the most impressive while the game high of only a single homerun could probably have been left off of the card entirely.
All told, this is a cool little snapshot into Larkin's blossoming career. I wonder how many people at the time actually thought Barry would end up in the Hall of Fame? I kind of wish there was a similar set to this that could be released now with all of Barry's updated totals (I'm guessing now he had at least one game where he hit two home runs, right)?
*Research Update: Larkin had a 3-homer day back on June 28, 1991 against the Astros. That was part of a record tying effort in which Larkin tied the record for the most home runs in consecutive games with five.
