I'm back with another box break recap from a recent Breaker's Club night of box rippin'! Today, it's time to look at the box of 2001 Pacific Private Stock. This was a retail box and it contained 24 packs with 5 cards per pack (2 minis and 3 full-sized cards).
That's a "New Wave" mini of Jason Giambi, numbered 066/199 - and a great hit for the Athletics!
The base design for the 2001 Private Stock set is nice enough. It's not my personal favorite year of the brand but I do appreciate the thicker card stock!
The base set is 150 cards in total, the first 125 are regular veterans while the final 25 cards are "rookie" short prints. I say "rookie" because none of the cards actually depict true rookies despite the small red rookie logo on the card.
Although the packs don't state the odds explicitly, from what I can find the rookie short prints should be 1:4 packs. Our 24 pack box only yielded five such short prints, however.
Moving on to the retail-only Portrait Paintings Framed in Silver:
We pulled three of these which was awesome (each is numbered out of 290). I'm assuming that Pineiro was our missing sixth rookie short print - we got it in silver form instead (a trade I'd gladly make)!
Now, to the inserts! Our box produced two full-sized inserts. The first is this 1:49 pack Artist's Canvas card that is printed on actual canvas material.
I think that Piazza is a cool hit for our box (and for the Mets in the group break)! It's also another example of why so many people miss the innovation of Pacific...where else are you going to get an all-canvas card out of a pack these days?!
Our other full-sized insert was seeded 1:25 packs (making it slightly rarer than a true "box hit"), it's an Extreme Action card of Barry Bonds.
The Giants are good team to have in group breaks that include boxes from this era - lots of interesting Barry Bonds cards out there!
In addition to the full-sized cards, each pack of 2001 Private Stock also comes with a pair of mini cards.
The size of the mini cards is the same as the modern day Allen & Ginter minis so if you like those, you'll probably like these too! This isn't a true parallel set though as the mini set only contains 60 different cards.
Finally, our one non-"base" mini card - and it just so happens to be a case hit!
That's a "New Wave" mini of Jason Giambi, numbered 066/199 - and a great hit for the Athletics!
It's always fun to pull a case hit out of a box - and as a whole I found our box of 2001 Private Stock to be a pretty fun rip. I think those of you who didn't have any cards from this set will be happy with the quality of cards that Pacific produced for the set!

I miss Pacific also. Seeing I'm avoid current year and vintage right now, I've been going back and picking up a lot of stuff from years gone buy. I really want to get the 98 Online set. I remember how awesomely unique it was when it came out and oh-so-outta date it is now!
ReplyDeleteTo answer the canvas question, Upper Deck has been producing a canvas set for 10 years now, UD Canvas as part of their flagship hockey set. Of course, that's hockey, and whether it's the same as this, well....
Cool Giambi! Damn... if a mini numbered out of 199 is a case it... gotta imagine there was a ton of this product produced.
ReplyDeleteI believe that insert set has 20 total cards to track down...so yeah, this stuff wasn't rare back in 2001!
