Barry Larkin
Year: 1991
Brand: 7-Eleven Coins
Card number: 10
This 7-Eleven coin was part of the 1991 Florida release by 7-Eleven and Score. In 1991, there were actually eight different regions that got coins, each with a different checklist (you can tell what region the coin is from by the two small letters underneath the card number on the card back - in this case, it's the OG region which was Florida). Interestingly, Barry was only featured in the Florida region checklist - not the Mideast, not the Atlantic, and not the Northeast...only the Florida region. (Weird)
As for the rest of the Florida region checklist, here it is:
- 1 Barry Bonds
- 2 George Brett
- 3 Roger Clemens
- 4 Glenn Davis
- 5 Alex Fernandez
- 6 Cecil Fielder
- 7 Ken Griffey Jr.
- 8 Dwight Gooden
- 9 Dave Justice
- 10 Barry Larkin
- 11 Ramon Martinez
- 12 Jose Offerman
- 13 Kirby Puckett
- 14 Nolan Ryan
- 15 Terry Shumpert
Barry also makes an appearance in the 1992 7-Eleven coin set, though that year there was only one release rather then eight regional checklists. After 1992, 7-Eleven ceased to have the coin promotion except for one year (2000) in which they partnered with Pacific to create a 30 coin set (unfortunately, that set did not contain Barry Larkin within it - instead Sean Casey was the Reds' representative)!
Back to today's coin...I have to admit that I like it a lot. It's a super fun oddball - and it's basically a round version of those little trivia cards that Score used to put in their baseball card packs. I even like the backs of the coin - some statistics plus the 7-Eleven logo (and everything is easy-to-read). For my money, this is an oddball done really, really well and it makes for a fun addition to my Barry Larkin Collection!
