Barry Larkin Collection 856: 1991 O-Pee-Chee - #730

Barry Larkin
Year:  1991
Brand:  O-Pee-Chee
Card number:  730

Much like the 1991 Topps set, Barry has two cards in the 1991 O-Pee-Chee set (his regular base card shown above and an All-Star subset card which I've shown off previously on the blog).  As I mentioned in the previous post about this set, the O-Pee-Chee set looks almost entirely identical to the regular 1991 Topps set, right down to the Topps logos on both sides of the card!  The main giveaway here to look for the O-Pee-Chee variation is the French text on the back of the card (and, if your eyes are particularly good, the "O-Pee-Chee" in the copyright line at the bottom of the card).

Comments

  1. The Topps/OPC distinction was made much easier in 91 than other years by the card stock. Topps cards are thicker/heavier, and backs are "traditional dreary brown/beige", while OPC feel thinner/flimsier with brighter backs. No silly variations in the logo watermark either.
Honestly, I never even clued in to the presence of French text. Mon Dieu!

  2. Pretty cool that O-Pee-Chee did a full checklist to match Topps. I remember back in the 80's, their baseball sets were always smaller than the ones across the border. I also love the bright backs.
