From Montevideo to Lyons to Ostend: Working on Completing Another Set!

As my loyal readers already know, I'm a set collector who enjoys the challenge of putting together a difficult set.  Whether that's a set like Topps Heritage or Gypsy Queen with their numerous short prints or a relic set (such as the 2020 A&G framed relic set which I've nearly completed), I enjoy the thrill of the hunt.

Completing a modern set like Heritage is definitely an achievement worth getting excited over, but for me the real thrill lately has come from working on older, vintage sets.  Not vintage in the sense of the 1970s or 1960s...or even the 1900s at all.  No, my idea of vintage goes all the way back to the late 1800s and the original Allen & Ginter brand of cards!

One of the sets that I'm currently trying to build from the 1800s is the 1888 Allen & Ginter City Flags set.  Recently, I was able to land five more cards from the set bring my total set to 20 out of the 50 cards!

Those original A&G cards are so gorgeous - I mean, even cards in rough shape like what you see above (and frankly, that's all I can afford) are great to look at.  I love the little inset image of the city in question at the bottom of each of the cards...the amount of time and effort that went into producing these cards is tremendous - I can only wish that Topps/Fanatics would put that level of love and care into modern products!

Should you happen to have any of these old cards lying around unloved, here's what I still need from this particular set:

1888 Allen & Ginter City Flags (N6) Wants:

I'm also more than willing to trade for other Allen & Ginter cards from the 1800s.  I've got a few more old A&G cards to show off in a future post - including some from sets that I haven't decided if I want to chase yet or not!

Comments

  1. Congratulations on getting 5 steps closer to completing this set. But after seeing your want list... I guess I need to track one more card down for my San Francisco PC.

  2. Love this set in part because of the way the city itself is depicted.

  3. A few more of these posts, and I'll probably end up having to get a few for myself :)
