30 MLB Teams in 30 Posts - 2022 Edition: #13

Welcome back to the next post in my 30 MLB Teams in 30 Posts countdown (plus the contest - see the bottom of the post for details on that).

#13:  Oakland Athletics (Previous Rankings - 2019, 2020: #14, 11)

This card looks much better in person than it does in the scan!

The Oakland Athletics have bounced around a bit in my rankings but always landing somewhere in the 11-14 range.  As with many west coast teams (especially AL teams), I don't have much against the Athletics.  In fact, in some weird way I kind of like the A's mostly because the Reds beat Oakland in their one World Series appearance in my lifetime.  Those mighty, vaunted A's fell to the scrappy Reds and with that, my heart went to Cincy.  Too bad the Reds haven't come close to greatness since...and lately they don't even try (I'm guessing most Oakland fans would say the same thing about their club so in that sense we are in the same boat)!

I've also always liked the Athletics colors, especially on baseball cards.  For some reason, the green and yellow color scheme often makes for a striking baseball card (and a refreshing change of pace in those team-specific color coordinated sets where almost every other team is either blue or red).  I wonder why green and yellow are shared by more professional teams?  You've got the Athletics, the Packers, and my favorite college basketball team, the Vermont Catamounts!  Go green and yellow!

  2. I'll take the Astros.

  3. It is a toss up between Houston and Colorado for me, but I'll have to guess my Rockies here. I just wouldn't want to be wring on my own team.

  4. Will guess Rockies, although I'm a bit surprised Houston hasn't shown up yet.

  5. I've gotta say Astros. Even if they're next, apparently you've forgiven them!

  6. I love the A's, but can't stand the owner. It's pretty sad and depressing... but I've been a fan of the green & gold for as long as I can remember. As for the West division pick, I'm going with the Astros. Outside of their own fans, I can't imagine too many people rooting for them over the Mariners or Rockies.

  7. You realize I'm also surprised the despised and barely penalized Astros haven't materialized yet. Likewise, I'll continue to improvise and dare to vocalize that the Astros rise to #12. I'll see myself out now.
