Barry Larkin
Year: 1990
Brand: Star
Card number: none (ad card)
The 1990 Star set featured a whole bunch of different Barry Larkin cards. I've already profiled all of them in earlier Barry Larkin Collection posts (see here). What I haven't shown off until now though is the ad card that went along with the 1990 Star set. The front photo is perfectly fine but what makes this card shine for me is the passive aggressive tone that Star uses on the card's back. The company threw serious shade at the "Big Five" card companies (presumably Topps, Fleer, Donruss, Score, and Upper Deck) about how they overproduced their cards while Star "only" makes sets with print runs of 10,000 or less. Today, even 10,000 would be considered horribly overproduced but I guess that was a rather limited print run back in 1990!
I still have a few more Star cards to show off - and I have a few more to still locate - but when all is said and done I do think the 1990 Star Barry Larkin cards could easily be the most complete career information (up through 1990, of course) that any brand produced!
Comments
Given the "Big Five" were probably producing on the order of 1,000,000 to 10,000,000 of each card, a mear 10K was extremely limited. However, given their extremely niche approach, good luck trying to find 10,000 collectors of any given player.
