Barry Larkin
Year: 1996
Brand: Donruss
Parallel: Press Proof
Card number: 442
The 1996 Donruss set had a full parallel known as Press Proof, with a stated print run of "only" 2,000 copies. The main difference between the Press Proof parallels and the regular base cards is the Press Proof lettering on the right side of the card. Unfortunately, all the parallel markings do is make a cluttered base card look even more cluttered! I never liked the big, foil box in the middle of the card and with the Press Proof parallels, there is even more foil added along the side of the card. To my eye, Larkin's image looks incredibly cramped on the card!
All that said, I'm still happy to have this parallel since tracking down mid-90s parallels can be quite difficult today. 2000 copies feel like a lot, but it is probably a minuscule amount compared to the glut of cards that Donruss produced of the 1996 set. That's the life of a player collector, you gotta get even the kind of ugly cards for your collection!
