Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. Today, I'm here to talk about something that I love: board games! More specifically, today we are going to look at the online board gaming that I did in January of this year over on Board Game Arena (aka BGA). For the month, I played 51 games and won 18 of them (35.3% win rate). 31 of the 51 games were two-player-only affairs while the remaining 20 games had 3+ players.
Here's what I was able to play for the month:
Most of the games on the above list were games that I've played previously. However, there were two games that were new to me.
First, Nanatoridori. It's a game that I can't spell without looking it up, but that's the hardest part of the game. In this super simple card game, you are simply trying to get rid of your hand of cards before at least one other person at the table. In this game, each round has one loser and everyone else wins. Lose two rounds, and you've lost the game entirely. To play, you simply have to beat what has been previously played in terms of number OR quantity. For example, if the first person plays two 3 cards, then you can beat that by playing two 4 cards OR by playing three cards of any rank (for example, three 1s beats two 3s). That's easy enough, but the interesting wrinkle here is two-fold. First, you can't reorganize your hand, you may have two 3s in your hand, but if they aren't side-by-side, you can only play one of them! Second, when you do play, you have the option of adding the previously played card(s) to your hand in any spot in your hand that you wish.
The only other game that was new to me was the rather boringly titled Middle Ages.
Middle Ages is a drafting, set-collection style game where you are building up your kingdom. Each round, you draft a card and place it in your tableau and then you activate the cards of that type within your tableau. It's a rather easy game to understand but I only played it once in January so I don't know how I truly feel about the game yet (I did win that lone game).
The rest of my BGA games were mostly tried-and-true favorites including 7 Wonders Duel (which works great asynchronously), Lost Ruins of Arnak (a game I still love), and Azul (a game that I'm quite bad at despite it being such a simple game).
I must say that I love that BGA exists and I love the varied options for games. There are heavy games, light games, and everything in between. I mostly play asynchronously on the site but you can also play live which is nice, especially for shorter games (Nanatoridori, for example). Basically, if you like board games and you haven't yet tried Board Game Arena, what are you waiting for? If you use my link to sign up, we can both get some virtual rewards on the site.
