MLB Hot Stove: Reds deal Homer Bailey to White Sox (?)

According to Dayton Daily News, the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox have agreed to a trade prior to baseball's annual meetings. The Reds have agreed to trade one-time superstar prospect Homer Bailey for the White Sox power hitting veteran outfielder Jermaine Dye.

The deal works for the Reds because they desperately needed a right-handed power bat. The deal works for the White Sox because they get (possibly) a great, young pitcher...assuming Duncan can "fix" Homer's supposedly poor attitude and turn him into a pitcher, not a thrower.

Other terms of the deal (if any) have not been announced. It is unknown how much (if any) cash will trade hands - most likely Chicago has to eat some of Dye's contract...but then again, knowing how the Reds deal (3 million for Corey Patterson anyone?), perhaps they decided to throw a couple million Chicago's way for no reason.

  1. If it happens, I would think that at least one low level prospect would be heading to Chicago. That's just KW's MO, when dealing a marquee player like Dye.

  2. Yeah, I'm not sure of the details. A Chicago "source" claimed the entire trade was false...so I guess time will tell. Other rumors have Bailey heading to Texas in return for one of their (seemingly) endless supply of catchers.

  3. The last I heard of the Bailey for Dye rumor, it was dead on Thursday. Anything can happen though, especially when the White Sox are involved.

  4. That would be an interesting deal

I too thought the trade was dead, so I was surprised when this resurfaced.

The Reds OF needs some help, but I'm not sold the Dye is the guy. Given his age, he's a temporary stop-gap type.

On the other hand, he's a RH hitter with pop playing in a bandbox.

Me ... I don't make the trade. Then again, who else is available? When Dunn was traded, I recall fans pointing to Pat Burrell before they think.

As for Homer, one thing for sure, he has a problem. Fixable or not, only time will tell.

  6. This deal is apparently dead (again). We'll see - something tells me that there is still some truth to the rumor...perhaps as part of a larger deal?

I don't want to see Bailey traded. Yes, the Reds need offense. But Bailey is supposed to be really really really really really really good. Can you imagine, if he developed into a premier pitcher, along with Cueto and Volquez...that would be awesome.

I remember back in the 1980s they used to always say you can't win without good pitching. If your team can score 2-3 runs, and you have good pitching, you've won the pennant. The Reds have Votto and Bruce...why not let these young kids develop before trading them away?

But then, it wouldn't be the Reds if they kept them all, would it?
