Review: 2009 Upper Deck Spectrum

A trip to Target this past weekend didn't result in any Topps Heritage blasters (nor any Topps throwback blasters), but I did pick up a blaster of Upper Deck Spectrum.

What I got:

25 base cards:

The base cards feature a funky purple foil with an "X" behind the player. I don't know what it is with Upper Deck and the letter X, maybe they signed some kind of exclusive deal with the letter while Topps was signing exclusive deals with actual ballplayers like Mantle and Cobb.

1 Blue Parallel:
#65: Derek Jeter

I can only assume this blue card is a parallel. Upper Deck doesn't believe in stating any odds (or any other identifying information) on their packs or blasters, so it's only a guess at the moment. I like the parallel a lot more than the base card - but there's no way I'd even think about trying to complete this set if they are only seeded at 1 per blaster. This card is up for trade!

1 Relic:
#SS-CS - CC Sabathia - Authentic Jersey

Each blaster contains a single memorabilia card on average - I guess I got an average blaster since mine came with Mr. Sabathia. The only thing that's interesting (to me) about this card is that it features CC in an Indians uniform, but is technically a Brewers card, but Sabathia is now a Yankee. This one's already in a bright yellow envelope in the mail destined for Dan at Saints of the Cheap Seats as a small portion of a trade.

2 20th UD Anniversary Retrospective Cards:
101: Fall of the Berlin Wall
210: Nolan Ryan

This set isn't bad, I guess if someone completed the entire thing you'd have a rather nice history lesson in binder form! That said, I don't really see myself collecting it...so these are up for trade.

Overall, all I can is that this set is Spectrum.
It's flashy and shiny. It features an "X" in the background of every card. It's a small set with only 100 cards. I like that you get 25% of the base set in a single blaster...but that's really only saying you get 25 cards for 20 bucks...not really a good enough deal for me. I doubt I'll try to complete this set this year.

I'm a bit weary of Spectrum because I STILL am looking for a few Spectrum cards from 2008 to finish my set (#15, 21, 34, 47, 51, 60, 64, 67, 77, 79, 86, 90, 93, 99, and 100). If you have ANY of those for trade, please contact me. (See my contact information and my full want list here.)
