2010 MLB Topps Jumbo Box
Jumbo Pack Showdown I
As I recently mentioned, I ordered a Jumbo box of 2010 Topps that finally arrived. In an effort to have a little fun with the box, I've decided to do a one-person box showdown - 10 Jumbo packs fighting for all the glory. Each Jumbo box is supposed to have three total "hits" in it, so there's a decent chance for some pretty high scoring!
Rules:
All rules are made up by me - and can be changed/modified on the fly if any special event happens!
Base cards:
Cincinnati Red = +5 points
Pittsburgh Pirate = +2 points
Team History Card = +5 points
Awesome action shot or cool photo = +1 point
New York Yankee player = -5 points
Boston Red Sox player = -2 points
Boring/crappy photo = -1 point
Short Prints (Pie in the Face or Retired Players) = +20 (are these even in Jumbo packs?!)
Inserts (5 points each times multipliers below - in order):
Black parallel = x2
Platinum parallel = x20
Printing plate = x10
When They Were Young = x2
Cards Your Mother Threw Out – Original Back only = x4
Sketch Card = x20
Hall of Fame Buyback = x50
Framed Silk = x25
Peak Performance Autograph Group A = x25
Peak Performance Autograph Group B, C, or D = x10
World Champions Autograph Relic = x30
1961 Mickey Mantle Reprint Relic = x20
Legendary Lineage Relic = x20
Peak Performance Relic Group A = x25
Peak Performance Relic Group B or C = x10
World Champion Relic = x10
Peak Performance Jumbo Relic = x15
In the Name Relic = x15
Manufactured Hat Logo Patch = x10
MLB Silhouetted Batter Logo Continuity Patch = x30
Cincinnati Red = x10
Pittsburgh Pirate = x5
New York Yankee = x ¼
Boston Red Sox = x ½
Player I like (non-Red/Pirate = x2)
Extra “special” insert for any arbitrary reason = xn (where n = “coolness” factor)
Ok, now that the scoring is set and the rules established, let's crack open Jumbo Pack #1!
Jumbo Pack #1:
Base Cards:
1. Prince Fielder (+1, cool shot of Fielder "bowling over" his teammates. I'm sure this photo will be done to death in future sets, but for the first time seeing it it's pretty cool.)
3. Derrek Lee
7. Mickey Mantle (What'dya know, three cards in and we hit our first Yankee. -5 points)
9. Tim Lincecum
11. Orlando Cabrera
13. Melvin Mora
16. Johnny Cueto (+5 for a Red!)
24. John Maine
35. Rick Porcello
45. David Hernandez
46. Chad Tracy
51. Eric Young Jr. (This card was almost worth points for being a cool shot until I realized that Young was sliding into home against the Reds.)
54. John Lackey
68. Brandon Inge
69. Kansas City Royals (+1, cool shot of the Royals celebrating one of their 65 wins)
74. Casey Blake
81. Ryan Theriot
98. Cesar Ramos
107. Scott Hairston
110. Andrew McCutchen (+2 for being a Pirate)
117. David DeJesus
128. Garrett Mock
130. Vladimir Guerrero
134. Philadelphia Phillies
137. Oakland Athletics
174. Mike Gonzalez
176. Yovani Gallardo
185. Hideki Matsui (-5 for being a Yankee)
187. Will Venable
191. Mat Latos
202. San Francisco Giants (+5, Franchise History)
211. Kelly Shoppach
220. Randy Johnson (It's amazing that Johnson has been pitching since 1988!)
240. Rickey Romero
243. Asdrubal Cabrera
256. Akinori Iwamura (+2 Pirate)
267. Toronto Blue Jays (+4 total, +5 Franchise History but -1 for such a lame photo.)
277. Jarrod Washburn
298. Baltimore Orioles
Base cards total points = 15 points
That appears to be a weak total but we'll see as the rest of the packs are opened. Let's see if the pack can pad its point total with the inserts.
Inserts:
21. Cristian Guzman - Gold Parallel (#0249/2010) (+1 point)
TMC-8. Million Card Giveaway (+1 point)
TR16. Ozzie Smith - Turkey Red (+1 x2 (player I like) = +2 points)
HOTG9. Lou Gehrig Replaces Wally Pip - History of the Game (+1 /4 for being a Yankee = +0.25)
WTWY-DM. Daniel McCutchen (+1 x2 WTWY x5 Pirate = +10 points)

Final thoughts:
Is that a good score? While I don't know for sure since this was the first pack, it seems like a good pack will average at least 1 point per card...especially if the pack hits one of the big multipliers in the insert section. Will the 34.375 points hold up - could the first pack possibly be the best in the box (I sure hope not...). Only time will tell, stay tuned!
Scoreboard:
1. 34.375 points: Jumbo Pack 1 (best cards: Daniel McCutchen When They Were Young Insert, Ozzie Smith Turkey Red)

Love the Ozzie Smith card. Is Cito Gaston picking his nose?
