Group Break Pack Wars: 1997 Collector's Choice vs. 1999 Pacific - Round 2

It's time for another round of smackdown - 1997 Collector's Choice vs. 1999 Pacific.  In an upset, Pacific stole round one from Collector's Choice with a final score of 14-11 (with 2 ties).  Can Collector's Choice fight back and take round 2 or is Pacific truly better?  Only one way to find out!

I'll use the same rules as before, so Packs 12 and 13 of Collector's Choice and Packs 9, 10, and 11 of Pacific are about to enter the ring to do battle!

Here we go!

Note:  In each case, the Collector's Choice card is listed first, the Pacific card(s) second.

Russ Davis - Mariners vs.  Andruw Jones - Braves
I never really cared for Andruw Jones, but even I have to admit he's better than Davis.  Point Pacific.

Todd Worrell - Dodgers vs.  Kevin Millwood - Braves
A pair of decent, not spectacular, pitchers for a pair of teams that I don't really like.  Blech.  Tie.  0-1-1, Pacific still leading.

Otis Nixon - Blue Jays vs. Quilvio Veras - Padres
Nixon was around forever and a day, Quilvio actually played over 400 games at the big league level by 1999...even so, this one is easy.  Nixon puts Collector's Choice on the board, and an early tie.  1-1-1.

Andres Galarraga - Rockies vs. Hideo Nomo - Mets

The Galarrage picture is a nice - it's a full bleed photo and shoes Andres' itty bitty shin guard.  However, the Nomo shot is classic - it looks like he is defying gravity while getting ready to throw the next pitch.  Point for the gravity defier. 1-2-1 Pacific back in front.

Manny Ramirez - Indians vs. Bob Tewksbury - Twins
Heh, poor Bob - no chance against Manny being Manny. 2-2-1, all tied up again through the first five cards!

Jeromy Burnitz - Brewers vs. Darryl Kile - Rockies
Kile had a 10 game winning streak in 1997, Burnitz never did that.  Point Pacific.  2-3-1 now.

Jeromy Burnitz - Brewers vs. Kevin Young - Pirates
First, if I'm Collector's Choice, I wouldn't want a double of Burnitz...he didn't win the first round, he isn't about to win just for showing up twice in the pack.  Point Pacific.  2-4-1.

David Cone - Yankees vs. Jose Guillen - Pirates
Even though I hate to do it, this one goes to Cone the Yankee.  3-4-1.

Jack McDowell - Indians vs. John Hudek - Reds
Hudek apparently made it to the All-Star team in 1994 despite me never hearing of him.  That wrong has now been corrected - and the point goes to Pacific for providing me with a new Cincinnati Reds.  3-5-1, Pacific on top.

Kevin Foster - Cubs vs. Armando Rios - Giants
Rios is a rookie in the Pacific set, but that isn't enough to surpass Foster.  Of course, Foster is a Cub, so that's not enough to surpass Rios.  Only logical explanation:  Tie.  We are now at 3 for Collector's Choice, 5 for Pacific (and 2 ties) through the first 10 cards (aka through one pack of Pacific).  Can the mighty Pacific keep the momentum going?

Tom Goodwin - Royals vs. Rafael Palmeiro - Orioles
Goodwin gets the win because cheaters never win Rafael.  4-5-2, Pacific still leading but only by one now.

Mark Leiter - Phillies vs. Walt Weiss - Braves
A pair of journeyman.  Yawn - a tie for this round.  4-5-3.

Edgardo Alfonso - Mets vs. Wilson Alvarez - Rays
I didn't scan it, but the Alfonso photo is pretty cool looking - while the Alvarez photo looks like Wilson's head is about to explode from pressure.  Point Alfonso.  5-5-3 (all tied up)!

Manny Ramirez - All-Star Connection - Indians vs. Turk Wendell - Mets and Marty Cordova - Twins

Turk might be kind of crazy, but no one is as crazy as Manny (except perhaps John Rocker).  I'll give it to the crazy guy - 6-5-3, Collector's Choice on top for the first time this Pack War!

Alex Fernandez - Marlins vs. Mike Lansing - Rockies
Sheesh, another boring match-up between to expansion era teams.  Another tie...  6-5-4 Collector's Choice.

Greg Gagne - Dodgers vs. Greg Norton - White Sox
Ah ha, now we are talking - a pair of Greg's doing battle on the field!  Gagne's picture shows him batting with a bat, Norton's has him batting without a bat.  You can hit something out a bat Norton, point Gagne.  7-5-4.

Jason Isringhausen - Mets vs. Darren Bragg - Red Sox
I never really like Izzy, mostly because I associate him with being a Cardinal.  Point Bragg - and now Pacific is within one.  7-6-4.

Jay Buhner - Marines vs. Sean Casey - Reds

Seriously, Casey would beat almost anybody - Casey ties it up, even with Griffey in the photo with Buhner!  7-7-4.

Andy Pettitte - Yankees vs. Andruw Jones - Braves
Andruw Jones already won for Pacific once, but it won't happen again.  Point Pettitte.  8-7-4 Collector's Choice.  And with that, we are two-thirds of the way through the Pack War.  Pacific squandered it's lead during that round, can it recover with its final pack?

Pedro Astacio - Dodgers vs. Tim Salmon - Angels
Salmon wins.  Salmon was on one of those celebrity softball games during the All-Star break a couple years ago and seemed like a really nice guy...  That's really all I got for these two players.  8-8-4.

Ryan Jones - Blue Jays vs. Jesse Orosco - Orioles
Orasco started his career in 1979, and in 1999 he had 4 wins, 1 loss, and 7 saves in 69 games.  That's pretty cool - and certainly enough to beat out a rookie who never panned out.  Pacific back in front!  8-9-4.

Paul O'Neil - Yankees vs. Aaron Ledesma - Rays
I always like O'Neil, and when he went to the Yankees he was the one Yankee I could (sort of) root for.  O'Neil ties it all up at 9 each - 9-9-4.

Jaime Navarro - White Sox vs. Rey Ordonez - Mets
Ordonez was the better player I believe, so let's give him this round.  9-10-4.

Troy O'Leary - Red Sox vs. Brian McRae - Mets
The back of Troy's card says he "proved himself to be an effective clutch hitter".  That's great, I guess McRae is an ineffective clutch hitter?  I'll give Collector's Choice the point for the redundancy so they get the point for repeating themselves.  10-10-4

Jeff Blauser - Braves vs. Shane Reynolds - Astros
Old Reds rival vs. newer Reds rival.  I don't like either, tie.  10-10-5.

Darryl Strawberry - Yankees vs. Rick Helling - Rangers
Did anyone watch the Apprentice when Strawberry was on?  All he did was whine, and eventually quit the show.  Terrible - I cannot reward someone like that with a point.  Helling wins.  10-11-5, with only two rounds left!

Al Martin - Pirates vs. Rod Beck - Cubs
Martin takes this one easily, setting up a final showdown...  11-11-5

Tony Gwynn - All-Star Connection - Padres vs. Alex Rodriguez - Dynagon Diamond and Rafael Palmeiro - Orioles

Wow, what a final showdown - in a Pack War that went right up to the final round, this selection of players doesn't disappoint.  The Dynagon Diamond cards are seeded 4:37 packs, meaning we should get 3 or 4 total in the box, though this is the first one I've found thus far.  As for who wins, I think Tony Gwynn deserves the win over two steroid cheaters, even if I like the A-rod card the best out of the three.  12-11-5, Collector's Choice wins a slightly controversial Pack War - and now they are tied overall, 1 War Win each!
