It's time for the return of the Group Break Pack Wars! Like last time, all points are arbitrary and assigned by me alone. For the first pack war, I am going to pit one pack of 1998 Pinnacle Performers against two packs of 2001 Topps HD (for a total of 8 cards each).
For each round, the Pinnacle card will be listed first, the Topps HD card second. The score will always be in the form Pinnacle - Topps HD. Let's see who reign surpreme. If all goes well, this will be a round robin tournament between the different boxes. Winner wins bragging rights forever (and we all know how much a box from 2000 might want to brag today).
Pack Wars:
1998 Pinnacle (pack 3) vs. 2001 Topps HD (packs 3 and 4):
15. Roger Clemens (Blue Jays) vs. 55. Ivan Rodriguez (Rangers)
Believe or not, I've never been a fan of "Pudge"...however, Clemens is probably in the top five of my all-time least favorite player list. Advantage Pudge. 0-1 Topps HD.
42. Wade Boggs (Rays) vs. IE4. Hank Aaron - Images of Excellence Insert (Braves)
Wow, when I saw the Boggs I thought for sure the Pinnacle set would tie it up...but how can they compete with an insert of Hank Aaron? (Answer: they can't.) The regular Images of Excellence cards are seeded 1:8 packs, however, this is the parallel version (and is much rarer, seeded 1:24 packs making it a box hit)! The insert has a metallic like finish to it, I believe it is considered "Aluminum" officially. This is also the third different insert card for the Braves already...the rich get richer - and Topps HD increases its lead: 0-2.
84. Kevin Appier (Royals) vs. 98. Mariano Rivera (Yankees)
The Yankees may beat the Royals in every other matchup, but not in pack wars! Pinnacle is now on the board, 1-2!
129. Aaron Boone (Reds) vs. 77. Bobby Bradley (Pirates)
Go figure, the first Red and the first Pirate both show up in the same round of the Pack Wars. Obviously the Reds card wins. All tied up at 2-all.
108. Bartolo Colon (Indians) vs. 23. Mark McGwire (Cardinals)
I guess Big Mac wins this one, despite him looking like he's dressed more to be a hockey goalie than a baseball player... 2-3 Topps HD.
8. Tony Gwynn (Padres) vs. 35. Jeff Kent (Giants)
Tony Gwynn never broke his wrist "washing his truck" like Kent claimed. Advantage Tony. Tied up at 3 again, two rounds left!
135. Bobby Estrella (Phillies) vs. 65. Shawn Green (Dodgers)
It might be Estrella's rookie card, but Green was definitely the better player. Topps HD takes the lead - but wait, there are two cards left in the Pinnacle pack, can they pull of the "upset" tie?
29. Andy Pettitte (Yankees) and 30 of 50 Ellis Burks - Swing for the Fences (Rockies) vs. 27. Stuart McFarland (Blue Jays)
I don't like Pettitte much either (darn Yankees) but even I can't be so blind to allow McFarland to win this one...and with that, Pinnacle Performers manages to draw vs. Topps HD in what can only be described as a shocking upset!
Final tally:
Pinnacle 4
Topps HD 4
