Group Break: Pack Wars: '98 Pinnacle Performers vs. '00 Stadium Club

It's time for round three of the Pack Wars battle - this time Pinnacle Performers squares off against Stadium Club.  As of now, Stadium Club is undefeated (2-0) while Pinnacle is 0-1-1.  Can Pinnacle notch its first win or will Stadium Club remain the dominant box?  Only one way to find out!  For this round, the Pinnacle card will be listed first.  This should be 18 cards for each box in a battle to the end!

1998 Pinnacle Performers (packs 07 and 08) vs. 2000 Topps Stadium Club (packs 07, 08, and 09):

Larry Walker (Rockies) vs. Tony Clark (Tigers)
The Clark card definitely has the better photo, but Walker was a much better player than Clark...thus, I'll give the slight edge to Walker and Pinnacle.  1-0.

Tim Salmon (Angels) vs. Marvin Benard (Giants)
For the second match-up in a row, the Stadium Club picture is far and away better but the Pinnacle player is the better player.  Once again, a slight nod to Pinnacle.  2-0.

Kevin Brown (Padres) vs. Barry Bonds - Onyx Extreme - (Giants)

Apparently Stadium Club got tired of losing - the Onyx cards are seeded 1:12 packs.  This card is even better since you can see the ego simply eminating right from Bonds' head.  2-1 Pinnacle

Mike Piazza (Dodgers) vs. Delino DeShields (Orioles)
Although the Piazza card clearly states he was traded to the Mets on May 22, 1998 - the card itself sports the Dodgers logo on the back (which makes it a Dodgers card in my book).  I don't like that type of asymmetry between a card front and card back - so the win goes to DeShields.  Now tied at 2 each!

Mark Kotsay (Marlins) vs. Andruw Jones (Braves)
I never like A. Jones much...and I never knew that Kotsay was a Marlin.  Advantage knowledge:  3-2 Pinnacle.

Juan Gonzalez (Rangers) vs. Cal Ripken (Orioles)
It's really difficult to go against Ripken...and Gonzalez really has no shot here.  Tied back up at three with one pack of Stadium Club down...  3-3.

Cal Ripken Jr. (Orioles) vs. Vladimir Guerrero (Expos)
Well, when you can't beat 'em, get a Ripken card of your own right?  Once again, Ripken is able to slay a formidable opponent (this time a beat up Vlad card).  4-3 Pinnacle goes back ahead in a rather surprising turn of events!

Andres Galaraga (Braves) vs. David Cone (Yankees)
The David Cone card is a nice card - it's a horizontal shot that is head and shoulders better than the Pinnacle photo.  Tied back up at 4 each.

Vinny Castilla - Swing for the Fences (Rockies) vs. Ray Durham (White Sox)
A battle of two good but not great players - I'll give the nod to Castilla since it is an insert card.  5-4 Pinnacle now.

Ray Lankford (Cardinals) vs. Jose Lima (Astros)

I like the above-the-pitcher photo angle that Topps used...the Lankford photo simply looks grainy and lazy.  Tied up again:  5-5.

Edgar Martinez (Mariners) vs. Garret Anderson (Angels)
Meh, a boring match-up...  I guess I'll give it Edgar, I always liked him.  6-5.

Rusty Greer - Peak Performers (Rangers) vs. Kevin Appier (Athletics)

The Greer card is a foil-board card and is a parallel insert set.  It's a pretty nice card, and it is definitely better than the Appier card.  7-5 Pinnacle now opening up a bit of a lead as we enter the final pack of Stadium Club.

Jeff Bagwell (Astros) vs. Brian Meadows (Marlins)
Normally I'd give the win to whichever pack DIDN'T produce a Bagwell card (since I seem to pull so many Bagwell's).  However, the Meadows card is beat up...once again Topps Stadium Club produces a crappy condition'd card.  8-5 Pinnacle!

Barry Larkin (Reds) vs. Raul Mondesi (Dodgers)

Hah, the Mondesi photo is nice...but it would take a truly spectacular card to steal a victory away from a Larkin card!  9-5 Pinnacle...with only four cards left there is no way that Stadium Club can win...can they salvage a tie though to remain unbeaten?

Tony Gwynn (Padres) vs. Mark Kotsay (Marlins)
Too bad for Stadium Club that I now know that Kotsay was a Marlin.  Gwynn, and thus Pinnacle, win!  10-5...and counting!

Raul Mondesi (Dodgers) vs. Rico Brogna (Phillies)
A photo of two players crashing into eachother beats a photo of Mondesi's backside any day!  Stadium Club makes it a bit more respectable...  10-6.

Alex Rodriguez (Mariners) vs. Shannon Stewart (Blue Jays)
If this was an A-rod card with either the Rangers or Yankees it'd be an easy loss...but I have to give the Mariner version of A-rod the victory over Shannon Stewart.  11-6 Pinnacle!

The number 55 vs. Edgar Renteria (Cardinals)
I don't like the Cardinals...but I can't pick the number 55 over a decent player like Renteria.  11-7 Pinnacle wins the match!

Final tally:
Pinnacle 11
Stadium Club 7
