Group Break 7: 2001 Topps Archives - Pack 1

Now that the extra teams have been randomized, it is finally time to start the break!  As far as I am concerned, you may trade teams for another couple of days yet if you desire, but be aware, cards will be busted during that time!

2001 Topps Archives:
Pack 1:

230.  Dick Groat - Pirates

243.  Ralph Kiner - Pirates

310.  Jimmy Key - Blue Jays

433.  Norm Cash (Tigers), Elston Howard (Yankees), Al Kaline (Tigers), Jim Piersall (Washington)

435.  Nolan Ryan (Angels) & Tom Seaver (Mets)

436.  Reggie Jackson (Athletics) & Willie Stargell (Pirates)
Can you read the card number at the bottom?

437.  Johnny Bench (Reds) & Dick Allen (White Sox)

450.  Brooks Robinson - Orioles

A few thoughts on the product now that I've opened a pack.  First and foremost, the card numbers are such a pain!  They are scattered about (and in different colors) depending on the card reprinted.  The card numbers are also written in size 1/2 font (or so it seems).

Second, for my sake, I hope this pack was an anomaly in terms of the number of cards featuring players from multiple teams.  I will, of course, random off all the cards featuring more than one team at the end of the break.  Maybe, given the relatively small set and large number of cards in a box, we will end up with some duplicates so that both teams can get a copy of the card.

Third, and perhaps most importantly, I love the fact that this group break will end up with a large number of retired stars to go along with more modern players.  I'm also a big fan of eight cards per pack - though you can bet that I won't scan 8 cards every time!

And with that pack, we are off and running!

  1. Chris, just out of curiosity...are the 52 and 53 standard size or larger like the real mccoys?

  2. The 52/53s are standard size. In addition, reprints of the newer cards are actually on the same thick card stock too (unlike the thin stuff of the originals).
