I don't actually know if Chicle is supposed to rhyme with nickel, but whatever. Today's package of cards is courtesy of Kelly over at
Baseball Obsession-itis. I sent Kelly a bunch of 2010 Allen & Ginter cards and in return landed a few more 2010 Topps National Chicle cards for my own collection.
Since Chicle is an art set, let's grade each card as such:
95. Ryan Braun (artist: Brett Farr)
I prefer realism to any other type of art, so Farr's rendition of Braun is more pleasing to me than a lot of other Chicle cards. Braun's helmet appears to be rattling around on his noggin, but otherwise the illustration is fairly solid. The background is unnecessarily drab though, so I'll take off a few points there. 8/10.
127. Kyle Blanks (artist: Brett Farr)
Two cards in and both have been by the same artist! Looking at the two Farr cards, it's easy to see his style. Fairly realistic profile and a phoned-in, two-toned background. I actually like this one better than the Braun, maybe it's the sunglasses... 8.5/10
235. Jackie Robinson (artist: Brian Kong)
Now, this is a card I can really appreciate! The player is depicted realistically and the background isn't boring. If all the Chicle cards were like this one, I imagine the reception would have been a lot better. 10/10
294. Stan Musial (artist: Ken Branch)
Why is Musial holding a bat in front of a bubble machine? Or is it a bunch of over-active fireflies? Either way, that's probably not the image association that Branch was going for when he drew the picture...and for that, a failing grade. 3/10
313. Madison Bumgarner (artist: Paul Lempa)
The Bumgarner card is much more difficult to judge because it was supposed to mimic old rookie cards (it's one of the many short print subsets in Chicle). Even with the image restriction, Lempa produced a fairly nice Bumgarner card. Taking the rookie card effect into account, this card is surpassed by only the Jackie Robinson card in the trade package! 9.5/10
Thanks for the trade Kelly! And, as always, if anyone else would like to trade, check out
my want list and make an offer!
