Tier One Group Break: Update plus some Questions for You!

All of the Tier One cards have been packaged and all will be in the mail tomorrow.  Thanks to everyone who has supported my various group breaks throughout the 2011 year.  I'm looking forward to hosting more group breaks next year, maybe even one a month?

That said, I'm looking for some ideas, feel free to answer as many of the following questions in the comments as you wish.

1.  What products would you like to see involved in a group break?
2.  Do you prefer older boxes or only current stuff (or a mixture of both)?
3.  Would you rather have a low price point or a higher price point?
4.  Do you like the current Buy 1, Get 1 random team format that I've been using?
5.  What product from 2012 would most interest you in terms of a group break?
6.  Would you have interest in a $50(ish) price point for a break involving ten+ boxes from a variety of sets and manufacturers sometime in January when the baseball card scene is pretty dull?
7.  How important are possible hits in relation to group breaks for you?
8.  Looking back through the various group breaks that I've done (or that others have done), what product(s) did you like best?
9.  Would you be interested in another high end break sometime (akin to the recently completed Topps Tier 1 break)?
10.  Anything else you feel like saying in regards to group breaks.

Thanks all!

  1. I like a mixture of old and new product. I prefer whatever method keeps the buy in price low. If that means I get 2 teams then that is fine with me.

I'm kinda looking forward to Panini's foray into baseball in 2012 even if it isn't fully licensed. As much as I dislike the base design of 2012 Topps I'm sure I'll want the Braves in the set.

  2. 1|2. Primarily older boxes. Stuff from years so many of us were away from the hobby. I guess that's post-junk up until the past couple years.
    3. I tend to like the lower price point
    4. Personally, I'd rather just get one team and pay less, but I realize it's not easy trying to get nearly 30 people to participate. That would mean somebody buying the Pirates and Padres every month, so that's probably not realistic.
    5. Maybe the Bowman stuff, because I'm not going to be buying any of it next year, and the group break would be a way to get the Indians. Other than that, not sure.
    6. Yes, if the majority of it was from product I didn't have
    7. Depends on the cost and the product. If it's a higher end product with a high buy-in and low amount of base cards, I'm disappointed with no hit. If its low price with a higher number of cards, not getting a hit is not a big deal.
    8. I've enjoyed the stuff from when I wasn't collecting, like the Topps Gallery and Fleer Mystique.
    9. Probably not. The Indians don't do to well in those.
10.Thanks for hosting them. With my blog on hiatus, I don't always take the time to thank those of you who put together these group breaks, but it's really appreciated, and has been a great way for me to build my Indians collection.

  3. 1. Depending on my mood, I could go with older or newer stuff. I've been leaning more towards full cases of new product, especially products around the price range of Lineage and Chrome. I couldn't use much of base Topps stuff (I build or buy a full set anyway, and it's the one product I know I can afford to buy several packs of.) The high-level products like Triple Threads are great, but I need to be confident that I'll get value out of it (an average of about 1 hit per slot is generally satisfactory).

    2. See above. I will add - for the older stuff, I prefer it to be between 1999-2002, when I was out of the hobby.

    3. Depends, though if a somewhat-higher price point means a much greater chance of stuff I'll need, I can justify the higher price. (In other words, I tend to prefer multiple-box or full-case breaks to one or two boxes of a product.)

    4. Sure, why not.

    5. I don't think anybody does Bowman breaks. I wonder if you could arrange now to compile a full-Bowman product break to be done either throughout the year or at the end. This would help team collectors get their cards without having to pay as much for the rookie craze.

    6. I'd say yes depending on the product, but since I'm flying to Japan in January I can already tell you I'm out of that break. Not that being in Japan is going to be a deciding factor for breaks - the timing is just really bad for me.

    7. Depends on the price point. Colbey's value breaks are priced right for non-hit products, but when hits are concerned I'd like to have a good chance of getting one.

    8. I liked the Marquee break because I did so well on the team I didn't expect. I liked the Community Gum case break of Lineage because I got a good range of cards for my money (remember: I'm a type collection guy).

    9. I probably would. The Tier 1 break was just timed poorly compared to my financial situation, otherwise I probably would have jumped in.

    10. I love them! However, I'm not exactly sure how much I'll be able to participate next year - and for that matter if I'll be too interested. There are well over 1500 different Japanese card sets to hunt for to build my type collection!

  4. 1. Hobby only type things that I can't get where I live. (No hobby shops in town to speak of).

    2. a mixture
    3. low price point
    4. Yes, I like the current Buy 1, Get 1 random team format that I've been using. Or if it's clear that some teams are just going to do better than others, different price points for those teams.
    5. New, non-base stuff as it comes out.
    6. $50 is a little step. Maybe in the $30s.
    7. The opportunity to pull cards that have a REAL cash value is the fun part for me. Having a 1/1 jersey of boof bonser just isn't much fun in my book.
    8. n/a
    9. no
    10. I love group breaks, and even though I haven't done one with you, I am looking forward to your multi-box break in January. In general, I hate box breaks where we don't know what's going on, so I encourage all hosts that you cannot communicate too much about what's going on AND keep your word. If you say you will mail by a certain date, do it.

    Thanks!
